Auto trans or standard?

You can run the SW3 with defaults if you are careful on the skinny pedal. This "Should" get you the best HP and MPG if you drive it correctly. I have a 6 speed and ran SW3 with timing 4 (most advanced) and torque 3 and got the best MPG. This was great until my clutch started to slip in the upper gears.

Hi and welcome to DTR.

congrats on your smarty purchase, you will be happy with it.

The smarty jr was designed for the stock truck to make the most from it. That said, if abused, you can hurt the truck regardless-meaning you can't just go stomping on the accelerator with abandon and expect all to be well. You'll hear a lot about putting in guages... that is wise advise.

What was said above is correct. Use sw 3 and default settings. Use as much timing as you can otherwise. Then be careful with the skinny pedal and you'll be fine.
you don't say how many miles are on the truck. The one concern I have is the condition of the tranny. Your engine can get the tranny to slip too much if worn. So watch that.

One last thing... it is "Cummins" (there is no "g" in Cummins... ask the member "Shorts" about that)

so basically I can set it on the performance setting, the three choices I see are , fuel mileage, towing, and performance.. I don't know what you are talking about with use as much timing as possible,, like I said, im a rookie at this so learning, how do I set the timing?

I wouldn't mess with the POD until you are familiar with how the unit works. Just leave POD on 99.

Leave your torque at 1 and put timing at 4 as suggested above. If you find that is too much injector rattle for your liking, use timing 3.

The POD feature basically derates your power to assist in fuel mileage-- while every truck is just a little different, you won't be able to go much less than 75 before the tranny acts weird. I don't recommend less than 80.
For what it is worth, I just leave it at 99 and use the skinny pedal to regulate mpg.
