My truck came with Sirius but I let it expire because I have another unit that I can take from vehicle to vehicle and also use it in the garage...my question is, has anyone tried to hook up there aftermarket unit using the factory wire and antenna? I'm thinking if I can tell witch wire it is (going into the back of the head unit) I might be able to splice my antenna plug onto the factory wire...

I have successfully spliced these wires before, I ripped the wire I use in the garage and was able to splice it back together and now it works fine...

 

they say you cant splice the coax cable. but who knows. those antennas are like 50 dollars so its probably just a ploy to sell more.

 

the Sirius reciever is in the dash some where and the antenna plugs into it, there is a patch cable that runs from the reciever to the head unit

"In the 2006's, and probably 2007's, the Sirius receiver is located under the dash on the RIGHT side. If you take the glove box out (just squeeze the sides together so you can open it beyond the stops and it will pop right out), then look up through the dash it is right there, mounted on a metal plate (they use some pretty serious bolts to hold that thing up there too!! ).

I just put a stereo in my 06 this weekend and replaced the sirius receiver. I took the plastic clip off the end of the antenna wire and it plugged right in."

"I replaced my factory system with an aftermarket Kenwood deck. In my 06 QC 1500 the Sirius tuner was located above the glove box, below the air bag (just pull out the glove box). I was able to pull the factory sirius tuner and put a Kenwood model in its place.

You can use the factory antenna, it uses the standard (I think SLA) plug. You just have to break off the big plastic stock plug housing, and underneath is the standard plug, should go right into an aftermarket unit. However, I don't think you'll have enough cable length to get it out onto a dash-mounted aftermarket unit like a sportster."

I've ripped them many of times and spliced them back together...they work just like the coax for a TV....two "runs" in the "wire"

did it today....works great!!! that was ALOT nicer than running a whole new wire...

 

does XM and Surius use the same antenna?

 

I'm not sure of that, but the extension that I bought from the link above will work with XM or Sirius...so maybe they are the same...

 

I can't vouch for all the models, but my XM Roady 2 uses the same antenna. The extension cable that Willysrule posted is listed for both.

 

I can confirm this, years later. I put an pioneer avh-x8500bhs with the sirius tuner. It came with an antenna that i ran for about a year. I finally decided to try and use the stock antenna. It was way easier, I'm mad i didnt do it sooner.
