Alright guys, the time has come to get radical. I have previously been running a 45* elbow just behind my cat. I want to do something different, and for me, thats a single 5" stack! Im going to keep the cat, run a 4" 90* elbow into the bed, from there I need to go outboard about 10" to the passengers side to get the stack where I want it. Heres where my question is. I plan on welding up a box with a 4" inlet (down) and a 5" outlet (up) and bolting the box to my bed. Will I need to install any kind of dampening for the box. I dont want it to vibrate the crap out of my bed if I bolt directly to it. So, for those that have stacks and possibly the box deal... can you please advise me!

You may want to include a length of flexpipe before the box to accomodate any differences in movement between the bed and frame/engine. Other than that, sounds like a great idea in my book...of course, I'm biased toward single 5'' stacks

Good thought with the flex pipe. Although I dont like using it, it may be a good idea in this instance. I looked at your pics and didnt notice any in your ducting - do you get any vibs from your engine into your frame/ body?

Anyone else with stack expierence? I need data!


btw my stack will be a single 5"x36" straight cut.

Ya I had a 6'' single stack in my old truck, you don't need any flex pipe. I had mine bolted to the base of the bed and used rubber bushings, also was bolted the the bed rail also with rubber bushings had no trouble at all. However make sure you take the stack about 3-6" above the top of the cab unless you want alot of cab noise also then the smoke will clear your tailgate. I enjoyed opening my back window and listening to it but don't open that window and your side windows it creats a vaccum and sucks all the smoke into the cab I learned the hard way.

Mine aren't bolted to the bed at all. In fact, the 5" y-pipe is resting on the bed and the stacks are clamped to the bed rails and I haven't had any problems what so ever.

I don't have any flexpipe, but I can imagine an off-camber situation that may bend things out of whack. Having said that, the newer trucks are much stiffer in frame and in body, so I guess if I can get away with it, so can you!

I have a friend with the box setup on his 93 cummins, the noise in the cab increased a little (it was loud, rattly and clanky before). So im not sure how much it actually ads, only one way to find out!!

you saying the engine was clanky right? I dont want this box to be!!! I dont think it will, I project that the box will make it deeper, like a subwoofer box, the bigger, the deeper!

Im uploading pics from tonight... Post then when able. But, I was able to build a new support bracket for the original pipe from the turbo and cat and also able to get to my sheet metal man to get the box, I have to weld that up (tom.) and then take out my bedliner for a mock fit up, and to cut the 4.5" hole for the inlet tube. The more I do - the better I feel about it!! Single baby!
