dumb question-but what are these "vanes" you guys are talking about?
something in the inlet tube?

 

They're plastic fins in the last bend in the intake tube, about 2 inches ahead of the turbo inlet.

 

They are a set of 2 or 3 vanes in the lower 90* elbow going into the turbo from the air filter. The take the air from the intake tube and provide multiple surfaces for the air to change direction on, instead of just the wall of the intake. This increases flow and reduces turbulence, two things that will help the turbo's efficiancy.

 

I removed the baffles in mine but also left the veins. I figured the directional function would help with performance.
