SIlencer Ring removal pic and air intake upgrade
Howdy Ya'll. Just showing the stock turbo right after I removed the silncer ring, and what I did to my stock air intake. While I had the tube off, I removed the directional vanes in the lower curve, and also removed the internal baffles of the main tube. I had a roll of exterior tin flashing up on a shelf, and cut a piece about 13" long. I rolled up the tin tight enough to slide into the main can, and let it unwind. it stays out perfectly. I will eventually replace the entire intake with a larger overall system of some sort. I just figured for free, this was worth a showing.

nice, now put it all back in. ill bet you destroyed the nylon vanes taking them out. most do. order a cool hose and a T.A.G. to replace the vanes and put the ring back in. the ring and vanes reduces side shear in the turbo. add a psm kit to the box and use a wix 49946 filter.

i reinstalled mine after running it without for a couple years. Have a cold air intake on it and to be honest there is no difference with "turbo sing" with the silencer ring in there and a CAI. I have the cool blue hose on mine.

Mine seems to be louder without the ring in it. I agree with JRAPTOR04 why not just be happy for the guy, instead of being negative. I've had 3 5.9's all without the silencer ring and never had any turbo problems.
By the way what is a cool blue hose?

Well, to each his own. Since I have stacks, and no cat in the exhaust as well as a k&n filter-- I know that helped my turbo sing much louder. I can hear it over the 2 spiral flow mufflers and stacks.
Just my mod pics, so if you don't think I did a good job or made a mistake, then ok.
No worries

I would put the lower vanes back in, and ditch the K&N. The lower vanes are supposed to make the turbo up to 30% more efficient (info from Holset), and a K&N filter is about the worst "filter" out there.. really filter is a loose term with a K&N.
I really enjoy having my silencer ring out, makes a little more noise but nothing crazy. Thou I am sure the Garrett I am installing this spring will talk a little more :-)
I like how you put the sheetmetal in the OE tube, good free mod. The cross vanes aren't really the issue, its the baffles in the side that make the air turbulent.
When you're ready to replace the peice with an aftermarket one look at the Airaid MIT, it just replaces the middle so you can keep the directional vanes and is very well priced. The OEM intake will support ~450 rwhp without any lower power numbers than a aftermarket CAI, and will actually provide cooler air than most.
A Home Depot CAI is also a good addition to the stock intake for about 15 bucks, and actually does drop the intake air temp a few degress and flow's a bit more air too.
As for filters there isn't anything better than the stock 4" pleated filter at this point, in terms of flow AND filtration.

I know in commercial HVAC ductwork vanes are installed to make the ductwork flow better. These vanes cost many times more than a regular duct, but they are so helpful they are worth it.
Perhaps the engineers at Holset are just stupid, or Dodge wanted to find a way to waste money on parts. Either way, I think I'll leave mine in.
As far as filters, as soon as someone can show me that a K&N will improve horsepower or mileage I will put one in. I have one in a naturally aspirated engine and I get to enjoy cleaning and oiling that stupid thing all the time..... By the way, that engine lost its rings. I never made the connection before now! The only engine I have ever put a K&N on and it's the only engine I have ever eaten a set of rings on.... It's even a Honda engine. I guess I know enough to put a stock filter back on that now....

HOLD THE PHONE!!!
I got to thinking.... I had to rebuild my Harley two years back because a valve stuck. I did replace the filter when I put a Stage 1 kit on it previously. Who do you think made the stage 1 kit????? K&N
Now I'm going to put a stock filter back on my bike. So I actually have 2 K&N filters and they are on the only two motors I have ever had problems with.
I can't believe this just became clear to me.... I am such an idiot... I could have saved a fortune....

I removed my silencer ring when I first got my truck... I also made a couple revisions to the air intake system.
It is fun to tinker and what not... thats what this site is about, right? Trying new things, finding out they didn't work, so we will try other things... etc.
