I've been doing that for years now w/ Smarty and my dash lights don't freak out like it did with the PPE. I'm glad your having good luck with your ECM/PPE combo though

 

Take me in I love the smarty, I have 3 local buddies with CR CTDs and when I got my smarty I let them all try it on their truck and now the all trading off for one.

I apologize for my ignorance as I am new to researching mods here. Would like to ask you to add me to the list, but I need more info first.

2007 5.9 with 112K looking to increase performance and mpg but at the same time maintain longevity. Was considering the smarty and magnaflow but don’t want to do anything that is going to possibly/potentially take away from the life of the cummins.

My last one (2nd generation) went 300K with me and is still going strong at 375K .

Any feedback would be appreciated. I’m sure it’s been covered here somewhere, but my searches have failed to come up with the info I’m looking for.

Imo, a person can increase the hp as much as they want via programmer, fuel mods, turbo(s) and ect....it all has to do on how a person uses that power via the skinny pedal. Actually increasing the hp helps the cummins become more fuel efficient since at the factory, they have regs. to follow.

There are alot of ppl using the smarty and for good reason. You just have to find/decide what best suites you and your truck. For the best results, you'll need to follow what other mods need to be done to get the best out of any programmer. Just to let you know, a person can not just load up a progrmmer and expect it to perform, there's a chain reaction....starting with the auto trans. or the clutch and gauges ( you don't have your sig.. filled out on the bottom of your post to let us know what's been done or if it's all stock).

When I bought my truck, it was all stock and aver'd 18 mpg on the frwy doing around 75-85mph. Now with all my mods, IF I stay in the same speed area, aver. 22-23 mpg. I'm sure if I had to drive within the speed limit, I'd get even better mpg....but I didn't do all this work and not use it. I have a lead foot which at times has a mind of it's own .

Hope this helps you, if I didn't scare you off...you'll have to weigh in the cost/mod. factor versus fuel savings for the long haul.

Not looking to set any new speed records. Just looking for some more power, fuel economy, and a little more aggressive noise when getting on it. Thought the smarty and exhaust would take care of this as well as adding some gauges to make sure all is well.

Where’s the best place to research the various programmers and determine which makes the best product? What other mods should I be thinking of to ensure when all is said and done, I have a sound set up?

Well, I started with a bullyudog pmt thinking that was all that I needed for a programmer. Kept reading about how smarty was alot better than all the other progrmmers ( alot of 'chearleaders'- now me too) and decided to give it a try...I was/am going for power so I got the pod so-6 (5.9 cummins) with the tnt-R tune which requires better valve springs, a fuel pump (capable of delivering plenty of fuel), and a few othe ritems that I can't remember....you can go to maddselectronics to find out more about the smarty products/programmer, this way you'll see for your self and not take my word for it.

Btw, doing any mods isn't neccacarily going to ruin the longitivity of the motor, it's how you use the power that'll determine that. If you constantly hammer it or use it for drag racing, or truck pulls. Same with any motor.

In all seriousness, smarty is about the only programmer out that's cabale of really fine tuning to your motors likings...power levels, tuning to each level via torque delivery, rail pressure, and a couple more that I can't think of right now and I'm not able to go out and check for you. I have mine set and haven't changed it for awhile...

A trans. upgrade is needed to say the least via convertor/valve body, but should really think of a complete trans. from goerend, suncoast, and a few others. There is ATS, but I have had real bad luck with their trans...1st the vb, then the clutch pack, and the last one just last month...tore up their 5 disc convertor and the vb failed again...so I'm anti ATS. I went with goerend this time...just finished installing the trans. this past Sunday. So far I like it.

Now I'm only a 2wd so all I needed was the billet input shaft, you're 4wd so I recommend a full billet trans. so for the most part will be bullit proofed...

I gotta go, but I'm sure other will chime in to help.

I started with the Edge EZ hoping for better fuel economy,tried the Edge Mileage Max. Neither worked worth a **** and caused cruise control problems. Finally bought the Smarty and first tank of fuel got a tad over 15 mpg with the crappy winter fuel. I can't remember the last time I got 15 mpg. I'll have to keep playing with the settings. I should have bought the Smarty long ago. Plus no cruise problems!
