Is a relay required?

I'm getting ready to install my new fuel pump. It seems that some kits come with a relay, and some don't. Is it required or not? If I do decide to add my own relay in, is it going to set a code and check engine light? I can't understand why some will use it and some wont?

These pumps draw more current than the small lift pump on the filter housing, so, yes you should use a relay. It should not affect anything or set any codes. I thought all walbro kits and Fass systems came with a relay and wiring harness.

I used a relay for mine. It doesn't take that much extra work, and you can rest easy knowing nothing will burn/blow out when you're 500 miles from home.

Check what the draw is for the fuel pump you are going to use. I believe the factory pump is fused at 10A. My walbro is rated at 15A if I am not mistaken. I used the relay from GDP as it uses the factory connector for the factory pump as the trigger for the new relay meaning if you needed to go back to stock it would be no big deal...literally plug and play.

I was pretty sure I wanted to put a relay in, but when the BD kit didn't come with one.......!? You know, just double checking!

Relay is certainly better and not hard at all to hook up. The 06 and up need a relay for just about anything so you wont fool with the TIPM. I've got the painless wiring block and use it for anything that needs a switched hot.
