Recipe for 500 to 550 hp... Will a stock CP3 handle it?

This will be for my Excursion getting the cummins. It's the wifes daily driver, my soon to be tow rig. It's getting a SPS62, 4" exhaust, *****'s whistler intake system. Probably going with a TST R49. Would like to end up with 300 hp for daily driving, 500+ for fun. Can this be accomplished with only boxes? TST PMCR and maybe a smarty?

Or will I have to upgrade the CP3 and/or injectors?

Most importantly, I don't want to negatively affect the daily driver aspects of the vehicle (mileage is important as well as towing).

How much hp gain is a stage I CP3 by itself with stock injectors? Any mileage increase?

Thanks...

i had the stock charger, stock cp3, stock injectors with a edge hot juice and ez stack and a walbro lift pump and did 507hp and 963 tq. the hot juice is up for sale it is on the safer side for power than the tst and smarty. the tst at higher levels will cause surging due to the cp3 not being able to keep up even with stock injectors.

A stock CP3 will easily support 500-550hp. A few guys have put down 600+ with the stock pump.

What is the next incremental change or improvement for like say 600 or 650 ?
Is all hp equal? I mean if you get 600 hp without injectors and you get 600 hp with injectors, or you more likely to run out of fuel with the bigger injectors? What I've read seems to imply that (but that could just be me)

A 62-14, 90hp DDP injectors, Bully Dog Scary Larry or Smary beta will do it. Just a simple combo that makes prooven power on the stock pump. I ran an aftermarket lift pump system with the Smarty, factory on the Bully Dog.. I towed with it as well.. This was on my 05 (bully dog) and 06 (smarty).. I ran that combo for around 30,000 miles on my 05 dually. It pulled heavy loads, weighed in at 8,040 pounds and ran 13.0's at 103 in the quarter.. I'm sure there are many other ways to get there, though this was my simple setup.

Jesse I did 470/800 with Edge Hot tune, intake, and straight exhaust. I would say gauges and Smarty will get you close. But a stage 1 pump will easy make it there and live if you get it enough fuel to it. I will talk to you more tomorrow when we have are fun day.

Not easily...but the right programing, turbo, etc can do it.

Otherwise every 3rd Gen would have 550 hp...and they all don't. LOL.

What year engine??? That will help us tune for you.

The year on the motor is an important factor, 04.5 and up can get to 500-550rwhp a little quicker than the other common rails. I think a good fuel system like fass or the eliminator, something like an PS62/14 turbo, personally I would do a TST and a pressure box or smarty and that should get you to about 525-550 on an 04.5+. One thing you must do is beef up the 4R100 in the Excursion, there is no way in hell that the tranny will stand up to that much grunt coming down the line. If you haven't already I would check out BTS for your trans. And by the by I think the Cummins in an X is an awesome combo! Best of luck with it! Whose adapters are you going to use?

It's an 03 engine (305 hp rated). I've got a GDP kit for fuel. Trans is already beefed up, so no concerns there. 48RE, billet input shaft, billet flexplate, goerends conv, ATS standalone valvebody, other important stuff too... Ford 273 transfer case with a dodge input shaft (different spline count).

It sounds like neither a pump or injectors would be required for 500 hp...

Would either a stage I cp3 or small injectors increase mileage (like a set of RV275's does on a 2nd gen)?

I would hate to go to 90hp injectors, I think it would hurt mileage too much. And 40 hp injectors are just so much money for 40 hp (unless mileage would improve as well)...

I'm thinking maybe just a smarty and some gauges... The less gauges the better though, (already have tranny temp and fuel pressure). The wife doesn't want it looking like my 2001 (gauges and switches everywhere)

Other choice would be a TST CR or Edge juice and not need anymore seperate gauges...

Ok...you need a TST and a MP-8.

Settings 6-3, 5-4, or 5-3 on the 03 twins program with auto 18 timing and 50% on the MP-8 will do 550 hp plus on OEM injectors and CP3. Flux 1 injects will push that up to 600.

Mix in a Smarty with the above and you will have better drivability and lowend...but no more peak hp.

You might as well get a stage 2 over a stage 1 IF you do a CP3. (FLOOR IT).

It is not the same as before with injects...Ones that make 40 hp on a stock truck might make over 100 hp with other fueling boxs or programmers in the mix. There is NOTHING wrong with small injectors. They are worth it.

How much do you want to spend?

For those that don't frequent the general diesel discussion forum, here's a link to my writeup on my project so far...

Planning to rip the Excursion apart next week hopefully...

So the TST box doesn't do pressure as well on the 03-04's?

It does it...I just think the MP-8 does it better and is worth the extra 300-400bucks.
