this is making me curious too!!! no instructions on that either in my box! just wondering if when you put a single in (con fe) does that washer have to come out also? the reason i ask is a shop installed the con fe & i took it out and installed the 3250.. so if it does then hopefully the shop took it out!

When I talked to Peter at South Bend before I did my 3250 he said the reason it has to come out is because the added thickness of the dual disk. If you went from a single to a dual it is probably still in there.

Oh crap!!! I guess the only way to remove the washer is to drop the trans? If the washer was to stay in there how much damage will it do to the clutch. I got about 1500mi on it now and nothing has went wrong or no sounds have changed?

Peter at SBC should be able to tell you how much of an issue leaving the washer in there is.... My understanding was that it would cause increased noise with it being left in there, but I don't know what harm if any it causes. Peter is the expert, I would run it by him.

I can't see it being to much of an issue I hope. All that it could be doing is grinding he paint off of the pressure plate. But I could be wrong ,boy I hope I'm wrong cause I do not want to drop that trans again just for a washer. Not to dog SBC but there should be some instructions with your new clutch on this issue. I am kinda ticked off how would the average consumer know to take a washer out. Doesn't make sense

beaver76,
I don't know why there weren't any instructions about the washer. I know when I bought my Valair 3600 DD there were warnings in and on the box about removing the washer. Maybe it's not necessary to remove the washer on a South bend. I would think that if it was necessary there would have been instructions on removing it.
Good luck,
Topper

I have a SBC 3250 dd and I pulled the washer out because my instructions told me to. Still makes the noise ya'll are talking about. Just thought that was the nature of the beast. I hope we can find something to fix this. Tired of getting weird looks from my buddies when I push the pedal in.

I have no clue didn't know anything about any washer and still the noise . I just want my $1800 clutch to be right. I can't afford mis instructions to mess up my daily driver.

There are two noises. One is center plate rattle when the clutch is depressed which is normal. The other is fork bumping the cover if washer is not removed. This you will feel in the clutch pedal. It may be remedied by adjusting the hydraulics.

Peter

I'm glad Peter cleared this up for everyone. I had my tranny back up to the motor when I realized I forgot the washer, but luckily I still had the shifter off, transfer case off, downpipe unbolted, and no fluid in the tranny yet so it wasn't the end of the world. I am quite certain the instructions do NOT mention removing the washer, but there was a paper tag wire tied to the pressure plate that clearly stated the washer needed to come out.
