however, as luck would have it, the wires on the harness that plugs into the stock harness and the alpine harness were all the same color. unit is up and running. inside still smells like solder.

YES!, You can buy an aftermarket harness that will plug right in to the OEM harness on one side and has the bare wires on the other end. Use the bare wires you need to hook up the aftermarket head unit and cap off the rest. When you sell the truck you can unplug your deck and plug the factory unit back in. Keeps the resale up on the truck.
