?? for Quad STD 06 users

I have been using the Quad Zillaraider STD box for about a month now. The good news is when it is set at 60 I am seeing a couple MPG gain. I lost fuel mileage on the 30 setting and have not used the 100 setting.

My question is in regard to the timing rattle. I did not have timing rattle before the install, but I seem to have quite a bit of it in low rpm's, some when accellerating lightly, and a lot when leveled off at whatever crusing speed I'm at either with the cruise on or off in light accelleration to maintain speed. If I accellerate heavily I do not have it.

So, is all this timing rattle harmful in the overall? Does anyone know just how much timing changes take place with this unit? I do like the performance changes, my truck IS running/purring nicely but I am concerned about the timing rattle being so excessive all the time. I noticed a little difference in the rail pressure with this unit. Nice and responsive to the subtle changes while running the crusie. I believe that it does boost fooling, even when switched off, which is also a nice feature in decreasing the turbo lag. But I guess my greatest concern has to do with the timing rattle being so much.

Any help siphering this out would be greatly appreciated. I installed the unit with the idea that it would be handy with a little xtra power when needed, maybe give some fuel mileage gains or help with losses when towing heavy loads, and that it could possibly be an excellent stack for some on-the-fly control with a fixed programmer like the Smarty.

A little bit of timing rattle is OK but I have none at all on my 07 and I even have a Rokkteck sensor which advances it even more. I did have some rattle on my 03 with the Quad Race installed but it was mostly when the truck was cold and pretty much went away when it warmed up. I would PM Qzilla and see if he can maybe lose some of the timing on your box for you....

Thanks for the reply Dodgezilla. Maybe that would be the better solution. I guess if somewhere dwon the line I needed a little timing I could just use the Rokkteck to get it. I think I might just use it as is for a while. The rattle does not change when the trucks warms up, pretty continuous.

I had the white smoke flash done just before I installed the box, I wonder if that changed the timing, and by how much? I DO like the way the truck is performing. By the way, am I right, or do I have it right, regarding the boost fooler stuff - whether off or on the boost fooling is active? I have read so much stuff that it all just runs together anymore.

Thanks, CD

I was wondering, how do you distinguish timing rattle from the normal diesel sound?
To me all the diesel engines sound like they rattle.

Hey tennman.

Well, since this is my first diesel, and I agree they do sound like they rattle anyway, I am assuming it's timing because mine is rattling more than it had been and rattling when it did not rattle before, that difference must be timing associated.

Plus, it is actually a slightly different rattle, tone quality might be one way to describe it, or maybe frequency and tone. It IS more like a timing rattle like a gasser gets - ping to it like when the octane is not right. I have gotten used to the normal sounds of the engine, this is different. I'm not seeing any change in my oil level, so it is not associated with an injector going south.

Lots of differences in going from a gasser to a diesel, lots of stuff to get used to. Black oil still gets to me too. Time to add a 2nd bypass filter, not just for the psychological side, but it is good to be running one for the added filtering protection. I ordered an Amsoil BMK-11 kit. My garage is beginning to look like an auto parts store with all the filters and cases of oil on the shelves.

It's a different rattle and you will definitely know it if it's happening. It may freak you out the first time you hear it.
As far as the Boost fooling, I don't think it matters because I don't think the engine fuels hard enough to get you more than the normal boost if you aren't adding anything...

Ok, the sound you hear is probably 2 fold. First we do re-map the pressure so you are probably hearing some injector noise combined with the timing at low boost levels. When you add boost it will quiet the motor down considerably.

The pressure level and the timing advance are not much at lower boost levels but, like I said without boost you can hear everything.

Also the module does boost fooling in every position including off. You should see around 36-37psi even in the off mode.

Thanks Quad for the info. I guess since I am light on the throttle I am hearing things as you describe. That 36-37psi, is that a WOT number? Being light footed my boost readings are def not that high as I accel. When I do punch it more, I see a good-sized jump in the rail pressure vrs my usual pressure. The motor does quiet down some with heavier accel. I guess the new sounds will take a little getting used to, I was just afraid that some damage could be done, that is something I do not want to happen, the power is not worth possible damage.
