Question Quad race box causing pre-ignition rattle

Hi all,
I'm running a xzillerater race box (130hp) on my '05 ctd and I hear a lot of pre-ignition rattle. The rattle is coincides with the power settings, that is more power = more rattle. At hwy speeds level 2 rattles noticably during acceleration and the truck has slight surging with cruise control. On level 3 the rattling is more pronounced and engine surging is really bad.

I have installed a new fuel filter and serviced my air filter, checked over all wiring connectors on the quad box, and am unable to find the cause for this. Yes I have a power pup, but I have the stock program loaded in the ecm. When I originally installed the box I had the plugin connector for the fuel rail hooked up backwards. Could this have possibly damaged the micro in the box?

Anyone else running this box on a '05 and having pre-ignition rattle? The pup makes good power without the rattle, so that makes me think that something might be wrong with the quad box. I'm not throwing any codes except for the 2 that the pup caused, 602 and 633. I'm afraid that I may be causing damage to my engine so I have the box turned off for now.

Any ideas or comments?

Yeah, I've got the same truck and box, or should say "had the same box on". I was using the powerpup before the quad and reprogrammed the ECU to "stock" before I put the it on. I did notice rattling w/the quad. I got a couple of codes so I took the quad off untill I can determine where the P0251 code is coming from. I haven't gotten a code since I took the quad off four days ago. I don't know if it has any bearing, but I read on another message board that the "stock flash" used by the powerpup is not necessarily the same flash that's on the truck prior to downloading its program. Maybe some sort of conflict, I don't know.

B Proctor, the rattling you are hearing is normal. It is the result of advanced timing. It is even worse if you were to use a TST or Edge Attitue box which do much more timing advances than the Quadzilla. I was in the same boat as you, and posted on here to find answers. Many people, who know much more than I (including the box guru himself Doug) all confirmed the same thing, timing.

To my knowledge, I'm not sure how much timing the Pup does, I thought it was largely a pressure box, which would explain why you don't hear as much rattling from it.

I have the quad,Race box on my 2004 305/555 motor.I notice a very slight rattle on the highest (140 HP) setting, not much to worry about though IMHO.All in all this box is the real deal, great HP gains, and mpg,s gains.I have been running the Quad race box for about a 2 months now.VERY happy with it,s performance.coobie

Mine makes the rattling noise too. more noticble with it on the higher settings, but the suging is what i dont like. Something isnt quite right. It completely stops surging if I turn the quad off. I can even feel a slight surge at idle. Cuold this be a defective box? Power just doest seem right either.

The rattle is timing. Basically when you advance the ignition timing the pilot injection is less efficient. Because of this the noise is more audible. Now don't get me wrong, the pilot injection is still there, we do not remove it.

The surging at cruise speeds should not happen. We have a few people call tech and inquire about is and we are working on a new flash. So far it seems to cure it and it was just a minor adjustment. Most of the trucks that had a surging problem were trucks with 4.10's and usually above 2300-2500 rpms when cruising. I think we have it fixed and if you would like to have a reflash that is easily done. Just call us and ask for tech.

Now another thing that we have discovered is that some people have plugged our connector into the factory sensor properly, but plugged the factory connector into our modled plug backwards. This takes some effort as you have to work on it to get it in backwards. We have not fully determined how this affects the trucks as we are testing it now and we only discovered it last week. This is something you may want to check as well.

Obviously this is not the exact plug you guys have, but it essentially shows where the connector should latch. You do not have to cut anything off of your modled plug that was just to reference the key vs the latch.

Hope that helps.

I did something different for you. The flash I am talking about involves the race box.

I did something off the wall to see if your truck would respond in the same manner as the standard flash did.

Did the dealer ever get your part?

Another funny thing is that is seem that those with the Downloaders seem to have more troubles with the boxes? I am wondering if the BD DL'r is doing something weird? If you go back and look at most of the issues the customer also has a Pup.

Just some food for thought?

considering that you designed the box around the stock ECM, it does not surprise me that there could be problems. You've maximized performance and drivability by depending on that stock code and all of those achievements must now be questioned once your original design assumption (stock ECM) is no longer invalid.

folks throw around these enhancements like the are interchangable commodities to be mixed and matched on a whim. changing the ECM code is serious stuff; then to signal-fool on top of that is kind of risky without knowing more.

one thing that bothers me is that if you push timing to the limits of the stock ECM, and BullyDog changes those limits, then (with the DLr+zilla stack) you can no longer prove that you are "within ECM limits", however you currently define and acheive that.
