pyro install question?

I have talked to a professional diesel shop about an install on a pyro gauge and I asked them if they remove the turbo when they drill and tap for the gauge...they said no and they do it with the truck running.
Should I walk away from these guys or are they ok??
They have been in business since I can remember and the diesel mechanic (the one that I think knows what they are talking about) has been a diesel mechanic for 20 years.
I realize that a gauge install is not rocket science but, the price isnt an arm and a leg and it seems fair for me not having to spend a Saturday doing it.
Thanks for any advise and anybodies experience

I am sure by now you have read a lot of threads and figured out what they were talking about. But if not herre you go. What they do is plug up the muffler and drill through the manifold. That blows the chips back out the hole. Some people swear by it but I think that I am going to pull the turbo. Or maybe not.

Good luck! Usta

I drill and tap, then idle the engine to blow out any shavings. Done this on 3 trucks with ZERO problems. No removing the turbo, no greasing the drill bit, no magnets or shop-vacs. Flame away

Had mine done at an Banks authorized RV shop. They disconnected and covered the opening of the turbo, then drilled and tapped the manifold, then they used a magnet make sure there was no metel shaving left in the manifold

Running is fine...it will blow the cuttings out of the hole being drilled and tapped.

The turbo is far stronger than the cuttings from drilling...if there actually ever was contact.

If the truck is running and they grease the drill bit and tap I would be surprised if any shavings even made it in the manifold. The drill bit pulls the metal out as it is drilling. I drilled the manifold in the side just before it enters the turbo. With grease on the bit and tap in both trucks and haven't had any problems. I would think that metal shavings would be more of an issue if you are drilling the manifold in the top, and the metal falls in after you are done drilling the hole.

The bulk of the shavings are long gone before your drill bit gets through the manifold. The last little bit of shavings that fall through will blow out when you start the truck, and before the turbo has time to spool up.

I thought the same thing when I read the installation for the Edge Attitude pyro sensor, but it made sense when I talked to them.

I put a rag on the tailpipe, and drilled and tapped. It will blow most of the shavings out and into your eyes, guaranteed. If you've ever seen the inside of a turbo you'd know it's not really a problem.
