which programmer or box to run?
hi guys, I have a buddy that has a 05 2500 4x4 single cab auto, stock all the way except for a drop in replacement k&n. When his worranty is up I am gunna set him up with some kind of box or programmer. He pull a trailer in Austin traffic often but other than that it's a daily driver with the every now and then blowing black smoke on the bicycleist as he passes them. I haven't stayed up with the cr cause I am a vp man as of now so not sure what to go with. He most likly won't do any tranny upgrades or anything major, so it will need to be some what mild or needs to be able to tune down to mild. He wants this mainly for mpg. So what do you guys think? And I would like to know which one puts out the most single or stacked? Are there any weak spots that needs to be adressed with the cr? I know the vp's require fuel system upgrade and gauge anything like that for the cr?

If he is not looking to do ANY trans work...then I suggest a MP-8 or Quad X2. Both offer adjust on the fly, decent prices, and wont destroy a trans too fast. Both are easily removable, and offer settings from 0-100hp.

the stock tranny on the cr, are they about the same as the vp in the fact that they can only take about 100 hp above stock power? He will most likley keep it around the 60 hp level to improve on mpg, so the stock tranny should hold up to that fine right? He doesn't launch it under boost or anything like the such, he is fine with power he has he just wants better mpg.

I have seen MP-8's roll some smoke...not nearly as much as SMARTY, or Bully Dog....but with lots of smoke comes lots of strain on the trans. Low boost fueling is REALLY hard on tranny's, which is what SMARTY, BD, etc are doing when they roll the coal. So for trans life, try to keep the heavy smoking to a minimum. A little coal is cool but the more you get , the harder on the trans it is.

He could get a SMARTY now and use it... It does not leave a foot print "the dealer can't detect it". When I had my BDDL I used to get codes all the time, so I won't recommend Bully Dog.
