pre turbo EGT probe...
I just wanted to get somthing off my mind. I've heard the possibilities of manifolds cracking from drilling, probes breaking off in manifold causing engine and turbo damage, etc... I just wanted to know how much of a possibility this stuff actually is? I would rather have my EGT gauge pre turbo of course for more accuarate readings... so if everyone could tell me there thoughts on the cracked manifolds, blown turbos/engines and whatever else we've heard i would appreciate it. Thanks!

I hear that none of the items you addressed are problems supposedly...It is ironic that many large tractor trailers mount the pyro post turbo tho....I haven't put mine on yet but I have the kit and will be installing it pre turbo in the next few days. Hope this helps....(only reason I haven't gotten it on so far is just being nervous about drilling and tapping the manifold).

I am with you Andy and Horse. I ended up putting mine post turbo in my exhaust brake elbow. I don't plan on bombing my truck in the near future and really wanted it for shutdown temps anyway. I have a mental note to back off if the temp gets to 900 but haven't seen it yet. Gauges have been in for a year.

Ive drilled and tapped three of my own and never had a manifold crack because of drilling and tapping
also never had a probe come apart
I think that there may be some inferior brand probes that could possibly come apart
buy good quality gauges and probes
drill and tap it
go pre
just dont let a nit wit do it
nit wits tend to screw up a lot

I did mine pre Turbo had no problems covered the tail pipe with duct tape cranked the truck and all shavings blew out the hole as it was drilled and tapped also anybody that has a 600 should get gauges and do a pre Turbo because I have seen 1300 stock and no load (although I was pushing go pedal hard ) cool time time is real short from 1300 to 400 by the time you get truck stoped.

Well its my first diesel truck and the first truck I ever bought that stickered above $40,000. I know I can screw things up . I found experienced Cummins performance people and watched closely. They dropped the turbo on mine enough to insert cardboard before drilling, then grease on drill, then magnet and then started briefly to blow out anything left before removing the cardboard and tightening up the turbo. A lot of effort, but very safe.
Mine is pre-turbo. I watch my gauges more than the speedometer.

Just use common sence. It is easy. dont be scared. When drilling, grease the bit, and use a magnet. When tapping, dont use to much force, go at it nice and smooth and you will be fine.
You dont need to drop the turbo. Go for it, you can do it!
Look at the pic above. Puting cardboard in there does no function. If shvings get in there , they will drop to the bottom of the manifold. The only time i would consider the cardboard trick is if you were gonna install the probe in the vertical section of the manifold just above the turbo. Mine is installed in the same place as the one above.
Dont forget to put "Anti sieze " on the probe before you install it. That is what that stain is on his manifold, at the probe.

When mine was all stock with just the gauges, I could hit 1350* at full WOT.
Air Intake and Banks Muffler dropped the EGTs about 75*-100* across the board.
With a Predator 85HP fuel/boost box, I could hit 1450* at full WOT.
With the Juice/Attitude on Level 4(Race) have not seen over 1350*. Havent been on level 5 enough to know for sure, so far have not seen over 1350*.
I am going to install the Xzillaraider Race Box this weekend. I will let you know what EGTs I see.

I keep seeing all these high EGT readings. Just got back from the river towing my buddys 20 Ft boat fully loaded with fuel and equipt. Ok I know its not that much weight but whatever. Anyway going up a pretty big hill at over 3/4 throttle never got me over 950 degrees. I have the standard output cummins with 4 inch exhaust air box, edge ez on level 4. I'm not sure the SO cummins is the reason why but if I had to do over again I would of not installed the gauges....They block my view and none of my temps ever get that high....I know my EGT gauge is accurate. I had it post turbo before and the temps were about 250 degrees less.

I have mine installed pre-turbo, but if I had to do it over again I would do post-turbo. I talked to some guys at the Cummins shop and they said it should be post-turbo. When I get a chance I am going to move it. I have SPA guages and I see spikes over 1400 stock. I think all the turbo cool down recommendations are for post-turbo, too.
