Powder coat chrome wheels?

Question. I have a set of MKW chrome wheels that are starting to flake really bad, I guess from rocks hitting them. Can see the copper color where they are flaking. What is the process and is it costly to get the chrome removed and get them powder coated black? Or would it be cheaper and less hassle to just buy new rims? thoughts? TIA

I am in the process of powder coating a set of chrome wheels right now. They will need to be media blasted to remove the top layer (chrome). The copper and nickel layers do not need to be removed. Glass bead is the best type of media to do this since it leaves such a smooth finish. The wheels I'm working on have been a pain in the *** because 1 of the 4 had two layers of chrome for whatever reason so I basically have to pick the first layer off then rebead it. I'm kind of learning as I go but if you have any questions it doesn't hurt to ask.

Good to know.. My less than a year old Mazzis got beat to he** from the winter chemicals they put on the roads here. At $500 per wheel, I don't want to buy new ones yet.

I have found a solution for protecting your wheels from the salt and chemicals. Go to your local hardware store and look for Plasti-Dip. It comes in an aerosol can in several different colors or clear. Basically its like rubber in a can and the best part is it peels right off without leaving any residue. Check it out on Youtube.
