Overhead MPG...goes up with boxes, down with programmers??
Hey all. I have a BD triple dog that I've had on the truck for around 200 miles. I'm decently impressed overall, but I am a little concerned about fuel economy. I have always read that the overhead goes WAY up with boxes, like 27 mpg when you're really getting 22. I sure as hell hope this doesn't also happen with the programmers!! My fuel economy based on overhead numbers went down a good 10% with the programmer. I know it's not accurate to begin with, but mine was pretty close when stock. Highway with slow speeds, 65-70 mph, I'd get 18.9 mpg with the overhead reading 18.3. Now it's only reading in the 17s. Around town is also down. I could baby the heck out of the truck and get 21 mpg as long as the traffic didn't get too bad. Now, it'll hover around 18 mpg in the same conditions. I also added a MBRP muffler, cat delete, and aFe stg. 2 intake, all of which should improve fuel economy.
Anyway, I know I still need to do a hand calc, but I don't daily drive the truck, so a good tank full will take a long time to get a hand calculation on. Does anyone have any ideas or know if the overhead is reading even lower than actual?
Thanks!

I never look at that overhead thing,, it is so off it isnt even funny. But I have ran both programmers and boxes,, and no noticable difference between them as for fuel milage

Thanks for the reply Kevin. I know I shouldn't trust it, but it was pretty close when stock. I normally do hand calculations, but even that can be off since the amount of topping off you can do with a diesel varies greatly depending on how much time you want to stand there . At this point though, that's probably still much more accurate over the overhead.

When I had a power pup on my 04.5. I used to get a good 2-3 mpg better when I ran it on the performance setting and not the economy setting. If you drive the exact same w/downloader or w/o downloader. (witch is hard to do) you should see a small increase in mpg.

One thing to remember Rob is that the 05's never started out with even close to as good of milage as the 03's,, the 600 engine was a bit of a pig that way
