Newbie with a purchase advice?
I have owned Chrysler all my life and I am going to be buying my first diesel what I need is advice on where to look,,what seems to fit my budget is about 00-05 quad cab and 4x4 the problem is never owned one and dont know any technical questions to ask on what to look out for..Our family drag races currently have a 68 Charger and 2 juniors. Any help would be nice on where to look and what to look out for.
Thank you

go a bit higher in miles, and you might be able to squeeze one in your budget. if you are dragracing, you know enough to wrench any repairs it may need due miles.
and the kids will love it while traveling to meets, everyone will be well rested, instead of sardine'ed in the back of a quad cab.
4x4 is a volatile question. it depends on how much you will use it.
my 04 was a 4x4, and it got USED once.
my 06 is a 4x2. and it got stuck once, but now i don't do those things anymore. they will actually get stuck on wet grass, esp with a trailer,
so if you park in the grass at your meets, you are a 4x4 guy

Each of the years you mention have their own little quirks. Personally I prefer the 3rd gen common rail engines (the way the fuel is injected) over the 2nd gen and the vp44 (injection pump prone to failure) the FWIW, 03-04 get the best fuel mileage and 04.5 and up respond to power adders (like "chips" or programmers) better.
Regardless of what you end up with, you're guaranteed to like the diesel! Welcome!

If you are looking for the Quad Cab then you will need the 2003 and newer. Try to stay away from the 250hp 2003 California Emission truck, as they dont have the good transmission. The biggest concerns are the transmissions and the lift pumps. If you can find one with no mods on it, I would look more towards one of those rather than going with a truck that already has a bunch of modifications.

Actually the '03 with the California de-tune was 235hp. The SO was 250 and the HO was 305. I had the '03 SO and yes, the tranny is a big weak point.
If you can swing it, the '04.5 up through '06 are all good trucks. The early '07 5.9's are a hot ticket and are priced almost as much as the '07.5 and '08 trucks.
