new turbo, lots of lag. any suggestions?

called to get a turbo last week, had a phat shaft 62/74/14 recommended. I told them that I pulled big loads, but also was mostly a daily driver, and that when I was pulling my loads, it occasionally took me into pretty busy cities, and I didn't want to loose my quick spool..... needless to say, it did. My truck smokes out 2 lanes before it spools enough to burn it. The 04.5 turbo I had on ran circles around this one. It of course had the quick spool, but also ran higher boost through all rpm's, even had a 3lb higher max pressure. SO, any suggestions on how to fix this, besides send it back?

I'm no turbo guru so i wont be much help. But I will ask what are your Smarty settings? You may want to change the torque management setting.

And this might be a dumb question but is your air filter clean?

ya, air filter was cleaned last week, and inspected when I installed the turbo. I turned the smarty setting to the more aggressive torque management, I had that thought also this morning. I'm running sw3 t-0 tm-0

you will never get that turbo to spool it is worthless for what you are doing. a 62-65-13 is what you need

Smarty, 188/208 Hamilton Cam, Steedspeed exhaust manifold and it will better. It's won't be fixed though. With your mods a 62/65/13ss is about as good as you can get. I have worked on mine for a while with little mods along and along. I have an HTT 62/71/13ss which spools better than your turbo and I can still black out several lanes of traffic if I am not careful.

Who recommended that? I use my truck the same way and Thoroughbred recommended the ps 62/65 for me. They gave me the choice of 12 or 14 and I've had a 14 before that I liked a lot so that's what I got again. I double checked with II and they agreed. Mine will smoke some until it's spooled with the Predator extreme but with the PMCR, it's clean. I.E. - it will spool fast if the fuel is there. It's also good in the city. I would raise hell with whoever did that to you. Craig

I ran the HTT stainless 62/65 13 for about 30k miles but it was still too laggy and smoked way too much in hot weather for driving in CA.

I absolutely love my Garrett Stage 2 turbo! Low smoke and super quick spool.....builds boost as I let the clutch out.

I don't want to slam the company that recommended it to me, may be just a slip up and I don't want them looking bad, but I called and talked to another salesman and he told me the same as you guys, *** did they sell you that for? But, on the bright side, I put some miles on it out of necessity, and it is working a little better now. I assume if I was pulling my trailer everyday it would possibly be what I want, but once it lights, it pulls like a champ. I am going to try and pursue a change out. Don't know if it will happen.

another thing, I was told I was pretty limited with having my exhaust brake, especially being turbo mounted. I see that BD had one that mounted to there brake, but I don't know if there are any other options out there.

so, a little more research into this, I called 2 other companies, they both right off the bat recommended the same turbo I have, 62/80. As Spooler recommended, one said a cam would make a big difference in the spool. The other said that the stall on my trans. may be to high, I think he said high. I am going to hook my backhoe behind it tomorrow and see what it does. My trailer and hoe CGVW is 21k approx. It will be a good tell-tell pull.

I have a Garrett 3782r
it spools almost like stock and it will work with a pac brake.
What you have will never work pulling a trailer even if you change cam and many other things.

The 62/80 is not whats killing you its the 74, it needs fuel and RPM to spool. I'm not PC, that turbo is crap for your needs. Whomever recommended it was wrong, plain and simple.
Now what's done is done, moving forward you can keep the turbo and spend more money trying to get it to work, and its never going to get you where you want to be. You can sell it and get a properly sized turbo for your application. Those are your two options.
I would call the vendor and talk with them about taking it back and getting you the proper charger to begin with.

ok, so I see a lot of recommends posted for size, I am going to call Ind. Inj. and talk with them also, they are close to me and I like to support local business if I can. But, any thoughts on the Super B special? It says in the instructions will mount to turbo mount exhaust brake. And, I have read lots of good about this turbo on this forum before.

I don't think the Super B Special is what you need either. I would do what has been recommended on here. Either an HTT 62/65/13ss or the Garrett listed above. I included the list of mods before to give you an idea you will spend much more than buying another turbo and still not be where you want to be.
