New Owner/Many Questions

Well, I'm new here and new to the Dodge that I now own. These forums look great, and people here have a wealth of knowledge. I'm glad I found this site to help me understand how to get the most out of my truck. Now, you will have to excuse my ignorance on these trucks, I know nothing! I cant even keep up with all the acronyms on this site. (Is there a page with all the acronyms listed and what they stand for?)

I recently purchased an 05 Dually, 5.9 with a six speed. It has the ISSPRO gauges(boost, exhaust temp, and one dummy gauge), straight exhaust and an Quadzilla Xzillaraider II programmer that was already installed. The setting are:
Standard Power Levels:
PL01 – 25hp / 70ft lbs of torque
PL02 – 45hp / 105ft lbs of torque
PL03 – 65hp / 165ft lbs of torque
PL04 – 100hp / 225ft lbs of torque

The first weekend that I had the truck, I towed 20,000lbs+ around 350 miles. The programmer was off; it towed very well I thought, and got 10.8 mpg. The second tank was mostly towing also, although it was mostly 3,000-5,000 lbs. That tank got about 13.5 mpg. Programmer off. 3rd tank I had the programmer on the second level and received 13.8 mpg. About half that tank was towing.

I guess my first questions are: What do I need to do to get better mpg and if I use the programmer will it damage the truck in any way?

Again, you will have to excuse my ignorance on these trucks; maybe I will learn enough to keep up someday.

Thanks!

I run the 65hp 165torq all the time, towing or not, I only tow a 36 ft 5th wheel so your over my weight, I average around 12 to 14 mpg towing, best 15.5 all on paper, I get really good mileage when not towing, just watch your EGT`s when I get over 1300 I start to pay attention. I also tow at 65 mph 99% of the time, retired, no where I need to be in a hurry. All my mileage is hand calculated.

Thanks for your reply, fifty. It doesn't seem as though I'm not getting the mileage that I should be, empty or not compared to you guys. I'm easy on the pedal most of the time.

Thanks ssandlin, that a step in the right direction!
