Dynomax Billet Race muffler for around $40 bucks.....awesome sound, deeper but not raspy like straight piped. Little drone but not too bad while towing my 10,000lb 5th wheel.

I put the mbpr replacement muffler on mine, left the kitty, lots of compliments, hardly know its there, pulled 5k with it this weekend 500 miles, no drone, heard it good pulling a few hills, of course I was running 85, thinking of pulling the cat but I'm afraid of going too loud myself at that point

But, if I left the kitty intact, would that most likely eliminate any problems with a drone? i am referring to the cat and whatever other muffler gets installed, including a Mag? I guess I am sort of asking.....would the kitty do the same job as the Aeroturbine some guys are putting at the down pipe in front of the donaldson's or Mags or whatever? I have heard that eliminating the kitty (in and of itself) really doesn't buy you much performance gain. Thoughts?

Hi TexasCTD,

Thanks for the welcome.

Where you thinking of the 30 inch Mag too, or a shorter one?

The Nelson 86131M 51" straight threw no baffle muffler is on my short list, but I'm concerned that it will be stock loudness. I would not mind the exhaust being a little louder than the engine IMO.

Hey Hump,

So the little bit of drone you get, is it all the time or just up hills with the 5er?

Thanks

I saw a magnaflow at the Dallas RV show. There was a guy there who runs a diesel performance shop in Ft. Worth who had set up a booth displaying the Banks Monster Exhaust (real expensive) and Magnaflow. I didn't measure them, but 30'' sounds about right. How many models do they make? I would still consider the Nelson/Donaldson too.

I am tired of talking about it and thinking about it. I am ready to Git-R-Done...LOL. I have been to focused on other areas of the truck, but now it's time for air and exhaust.

It will be a little louder, but still pleasant while towing. Sounds like the Nelson 86131M is the muffler for you. It is for me!

I agree on hashing over the muffler. Lots of threads on it and I'm tired already from searching. Not many talking about the different Magnaflow lengths or with sound clips of Mag, from the searching I have done so far.

The following are Magnaflow part numbers (Stainless) for there 7 inch round diesel mufflers. The first number is the length of the can; the second number is the overall length with pipe stubs sticking out both ends.

24" 30" 14772
20" 27" 14771
30" 36" 14773
14" 20" 14770

Hey Big Bob,

Did that muffler come center in center out?

I'm concerned that it will not fit as I have a short bed crew. I guess I'd better start doing some research on the Nelson now too...

We stock 4" SS off-set pipes which are 44" tip to tip which will allow the use of a straight through muffler with the correct off-set.

The only drone is when I am towing the 5th wheel up a decent grade otherwise it's fairly quiet in the cab but with the windows down....well that's another story

Wow Hump! That looks more like a loudner than a muffler!

Thanks for describing how your muffler can be loud at times. I'm still leaning toward a muffler that is not too big and quiet.

I see the specs are 16.5 long on that. I'm thinking that the bigger Mag in any length will muffle more than the Dynomax. Would you agree on that assumption?

Thanks for letting me know about that pipe. I would assume it is Mandrel as well correct?

I could do it at home, and still may knowing I can get the pipe shipped to me, but I believe I have pretty much decided to use Bob's Muffler in Bakersfield. They can do Mandrel in 4 inch SS, and are within a day trip of Vegas all total. Unless they are not well liked here, then who knows.

67charger383hp, yes the pipe is mandrel bent. We use it to install the Aeroturbine kits for hte cat-back systems on the Dodge 600s.

I would think that a longer muffler will be more quiet than a short one only because the exhaust will quiet down more when going through a long muffler rather than a short one. So to answer your question, yes the Magnaflow will muffle the exhaust more than the Dynomax Billet Race muffler.

Anyone around here take the stock muffler from 2004.5 and up truck and cut it open to see how restrictive it is?
