Which new Muffler???

Hi all, need to put a new muffler and tail pipe on since the stock one rotted off. Gonna go with a walker tailpipe from Advance Autoparts (not a bad price and free shipping). For the muffler the two choices are the Donaldson
M100580 51" X 5" in and out or the M085171 40" X 4" in and out. What are the pros and cons of each? Which one will be the easiest and cleanest install? Will the muffler be able to use the stock hanger locations? Thanks in advance.

You will have to weld the bars on so they can go in the stock hangar locations. I also had to cut the one off the frame as it interfered with the muffler. I put a Donaldson M090535 on there and I love it for the sound and very little to no drone. I do have a full 5" turbo back though.

If you aren't capable of doing the welding and so forth, I know several have taken their stuff to a muffler shop and got the work done for cheap.

I don't know about either of the part numbers you're asking about. The M090535 is their off road muffler and is pretty much straight through. I dyno'd a couple mufflers before settling on the M090535. It brought my hp and tq back where it used to be with my flo pro straight through that came with my 5" system in the first place.

If you do an advanced search here using the word donaldson and my username staarma you will come up with a plethora of info to read along with part numbers and the best place to order from.

I also have the long 4". Quiet as a church mouse, no drone, it also improved my radio reception and stopped my receding hair line.

For simplicity, if your going to add a 5 inch tail pipe then I would go with the 5 inch muffler. If your going with a 4 inch tail pipe then go with the 4 inch muffler, this will keep the need for reducers to a minimum and make for a clean install.

I run the 4 inch by 40 inch muffler and it sounds good, but I do have some drone. I have a 5 inch by 51 inch donaldson laying around that I plan on putting on my truck once I get a 5 inch tail pipe.

I have a channel on youtube with sound clips of the 40 incher, just keep in mind I am running a 2nd gen manifold with my super b single.

Well I don't want any drone. Anyone have the part number for the 51"X4" in out? Has anyone else had drone with the shorter one. I figured that the shorter one would be an easier install.

Hmm... I'm going to take a wild guess and say yes, however my 03 never came with a cat so I'm not 100% sure. My 40" muffler has plenty of room under there though! I've go a 5"x51" donaldson laying around the house, I'll see if I can get some measurements tomorrow morning or monday and I'll get back to you.

Sorry, been out of town on vacation. I will climb under there and snap some pics when I get back in town this weekend. The clearance is tight for a shortbed but doable.

I had the 51" donaldson on for a while I liked it turbo spooled better than stock little lower egts' slight drone not much. My son got a different muffler set up and gave me his 40" donaldson that is the way to go,turbo spooled even better and it is a little deeper than the 51", little drone at 75 but no more than putting a flowmaster on a gas motor.

Hey guys i'm trying to do the same thing for one of my customers, I'm trying to steer him away from Magnaflow as he tows a big fifth wheel camper. My question is, where would i find a 5" tailpipe and front pipe or adapters for the front to go from 4" to 5" if I leave the stock downpipe? Thanks in advance
