new afe intake really loud
I just installed an afe Stage 2 (not the Si) I bought off Craigslist. Now it is so loud inside the truck that two people can hardly have a conversation going down the freeway - the whistle (I'm assuming turbo) is piercingly loud, almost like it's feeding back through the radio turned way up. It also sounds like turning the interior heater fan on high every time I accelerate - a really loud whooshing sound during acceleration. I didn't remove the silencer ring or do anything other than take the old intake off and put the new one on. I wouldn't mind it being a little louder, but this is really excessive. Is that normal and if so, is there anything that can be done about it? It's hard to believe that such a simple swap would make that much difference. I know I'm being a crybaby about it, but I'd like to make the truck perform better without sacrificing drivability (sometimes I like to be able to have a conversation at some point along a 5-hour road trip). Thank you in advance for your input.

I have the HTT and its quite louder than the stock turbo, but I can still hold conversations just fine...heck i even have stacks and its fine.
Check for lose connections, any holes in the tube or cracked boot that goes over the turbo...

Sorry, I forgot to list the details of the truck. It's basically bone stock except for a 4" Magnaflow turbo-back exhaust & a FASS HPFP lift pump. Thank you for your replies - it definitely doesn't seem like a normal amount of noise. I've put intakes on gas rigs before & it's always made them a little more throaty, but never been so much that it sounded wrong. I'll take a look at it a little more today & make sure all the connections are tight & there aren't any gaps or cracks.

Whaaaaat?..... (LOL) Man when I was in the service and had to drive from SoCal to North Carolina, I thought I was going to go crazy. The sound get's in your inner ear and just seems to get louder and louder!!! As long as I don't have to drive across Texas "EVER" again, I'll be alright.... YOu should hear it with a PAC Brake, it's sounds awesome!!! just like a real jake brake... not just a shhhhh through the exhaust...

Is there a way to quiet this AFE intake a bit?
Would wrapping the tube help or is the noise mostly coming out the filter?
As other have mentioned it looks like the SI version is much quieter(enclosed filter box). Thinking about cutting my losses and putting the stock box back in with a HD CAI (all baffles are intact) and 4" pleated filter.
Thanks,
Tim

Anyone considering swapping intakes or exhausts owes it to themselves to read some REAL performance data (much is available here) about what can be expected for performance gains BEFORE they plop down their hard earned cash and find themselves disappointed.
If you think you are getting performance you may be believing a snake-oil salesman instead of the facts.
Then again if you want to change parts to increase the sound of your truck you will get your money's worth. Just pay close attention to your silica levels and roar around all you like!

the afe is junk to start with. throw it in the trash and go back stock with a psm kit and 4" filter.you do not state if you are 04.4 or 04.5 the 04.5 has some white nylon baffles in the elbow. them along with the silencer ring reduce sideshear in the turbo rasing turbo efficiency. the air box let's in hot air reducing compressor efficency and lastly the filter is better than a K&N but still pp. if your elbow does not have the straightning vanes get a coolhose and a T.A.G. and for the one with the htt the T.A.G. has a silincer ring built into it
