New 2005.....poor 48re performance
Just brought home my new 05 long box. Very happy with everything but the tranny. Its seems like the torque converter is always slipping. When it does lock up in 4th it pulls like it should. The rest of the time its vagueness is terrible. Will this get better as it breaks in, or do i need to spend some dough on making it feel like it should from the factory. I am running the juice with attitude on level 2/3 and it shows the tranny slipping 1%which i dont think is much. The rigs has right at 700 miles on it. If you compare the 48re to the allison or touque shift, the feel of 48re isnt that great in my opinion, unless your locked up in 4th then it feels great. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Never had a problem with any of the above Does it do it with the box off also?
I am not a big fan of the torque converter in the 48re, but I've never had a vague feeling on mine at all ! Shifts are crisp and no problems except for slow take off.
I also have the 4.10 gearing though

I had that for a littel while until I started BOMBing and it went away or went away from being used but at certain speeds it will sit there and hunt back and forth sort if. I put a shift kit and did some VB mods as well as an aftermarket Billett TC. I use it to pull a 4 Car trailer and since the tranny mods and a few other additions I am very happy with the way it acts. If I had it to do all over again I would have done the tranny first.

There does seem to be a little TC spool up lag time, if I run mine in the T/H mode it is better. I was told that with less than $500 into it, it can snap your neck. Don't know that I want that, but good and firm would be nice, but then again DC spent a lota cash to make it shift firm but soft so people wouldn't whine about it shifting hard.

Input shaft will need upgrading if a TC and VB are changed. Stock shaft is at its limits!

Bigman,
I did VB Mods, and a TC and have about 20K on those two things and have had no problems and I run the Banks Six-Gun and BDDL and Propane. I have had no problems with any of the shafts and doubt you would need to do that kind of modification unless you were racing or sled pulling all of the time. I thought that up to about 500 HP the stock shafts were fine, I may be mistaken.
