Need a new head
Hey guys,
Well like the title states I think I need a new head for my 03. I dropped a valve this morning on the way to work this morning. I should have the head off in the morning to inspect the damage. I know that I have at least one broken valve and 1 of my new F1 injectors is stuck in the head so I know that baby is shot. So who knows a place that I can buy a new head at a good price?
Ya know I guess it's true what they say... If ya want to play... Ya got ta pay...
Thanks,
Topper

The head for my truck (05) is p/n 3969071RX and dealer cost is 1077.19 with a 84.50 core charge. Your core is junk if the bottom of the head is all beat up. They may give you a partial core, but at 84.50 that isnt all that bad. I know you can put the newer heads (04.5-up) on the 03-04 engines. The newer heads have a better seat design that doenst let the exhaust seats come loose.
I just noticed Cummins has 2 different thickness headgaskets for our trucks.
3958644 is 1.18mm thick and 3958645 is 1.25mm thick. I never noticed that before.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replys.
We got the head off today and yep she dropped a valve. (#6 of course)
The head of the valve beat the snot out of the head, injector, piston and the other valves. So it's time to break out the wallet. I called a few places and found out that Cummins had to send back all their remaned heads due to a recall. They have totally new heads (complete) for about $1500.00.
So I guess that's the way I'll go. I also need a new piston, rings, pushrods, bearings and all the gaskets that go along with this mess.
As far as how this happened I hear that 03 are prone to dropping valve seats. So you could blame it on that but I think maybe some of my 1800 deg runs may have had a thing to do with it. Yep I have won a bunch of races with this truck and have spent even more on the repairs. Yet I haven't added a new turbo to the mix. That will be corrected as soon as the truck gets back on the road.
So learn from my mistake KEEP THEM COOL!!!
Thanks again guys,
Topper
