Need More Air
I need more air. I changed my air, oil and fuel filter over the weekend and since I was thinking about it I reset the filter minder. Drove the truck, put my foot into it and then checked it again when I got to work this morning. It was sucked down to 65%. Now, it's very possible that I have one of those weak springs because I have an early '03 and to my knowledge the spring was never replaced. But, regardless of the spring, I need more air.
So....what are my options? Will the cheap ole' Home Depot modification do the trick or do I need to put out the money on a Ram Air III or something similar?

Personally, I'd do the Ram Air 3. Just cause it's cool. On the other hand, from what I've read, the Home Depot mod will work just fine. Go ahead and do the Home Depot mod. It only costs a few bucks and an hour or so of your time. Then you can tell for yourself if you need to go to the Ram Air 3.

I have been pulling the filter minder down with this truck right off of the lot. No dusty conditions or anything like that. 2300 or so miles, and have had the truck about two and a half weeks.
I have a Ram Air III on order.

Hoss, I did the home depot mod. i also put stockings over the original air inlet and the pipe I installed at the bottom of the box (keeps rain water out). The filter minder no longer pulls down under any condition - towing heavy or not. I'm still a little leary of the oiled filters after reading several threads lately. I'll stick with paper for now. i fyou don't like you can always go spend $300 on another system. I spent about $10 on mine.

There is a thread on it somewhere that has pics....but basically it is cutting a hole in the bottom of the airbox, installing a 90* (at the proper angle), and putting pantyhose over it to help keep out any rain water that could get splashed up on it.

Yes just pull the filter minder off and take a quick suck on the input end. You shouldn't have to suck hard to pull it down. If it doesn't budge then it's defective

Cheap man I am, I got really torqued when my air cleaner showed up all black and stuff, only after a weekend's towing. Seems that side air intake on the stock box picks up all kinds of crap off the road from the right front tire. And, my suck gauge would always show less than 100%, even with a new filter.
Took my Dremel and cut the entire bottom out of the air box. The difference in my rig was a seat of the pants change, and it seems my air cleaner isn't as muckied up so quickly as before. In daily driving, no real change, but I hooked up my 4 ton 25' trailer, and, hey, this thing loves to tow.

triplenickel,
You could always put a vacuum guage to the flow guage and see what pressure it takes to pull it down, I'm sure someone on this awesome sight has the specs for this or maybe a resource for you.
