Need advice on applying tape to Power Wagon Flares...

Well I have pretty much decided to order power wagon fender flares to my truck. However I wanna apply double sided tape to the little rubber seal that contacts the painted surface of the truck to prevent paint wear. I know some of you have done this. What is tape did you use exactly? I can only guess that it must be quite thin. Also does the tape provide a good seal all the way around the fender flare? I wanna make sure this is going to work before I blow $200.00 on flares. Thanks for any advice!

The tape I used is 3M double sided tape. The rubber molding on the flares only contacts the body along its edge. If you have the flares you will see what I mean, If not go to a dealer and find a PW and just pull the flare back with your fingernail. That being said; the tape you want is 1/4 or 1/2 inch wide, I used the 1/4 and carefully ran it very close to the outside edge of the molding on the flare. The tape is also avilable in two thicknesses. I forget the dimension but I used the thinner stuff. I went to a automotive paint supply and got a thirty foot roll. The auto paint supplys' carry a better selection than wally world. Yellow pages>paint>automotive. It is used by body shops to re-apply emblems after a repaint. I applied it to the molding first and left the red protective tape on the fender side of the flare. I pulled the red tape back
about six inches from each end of the flare to grab after I installed the flares. I then carefully pulled the red tape off the adhesive as I went around the flare and pressed it onto the side of the fender well. Been about 3 months and still a good seal. Hope that helps

MuleMan! That truck of yours is sweet! I love the pic of it in the snow! Very sharp! Does it have a lift kit?

Thanks for the info on the fenderflares. So does the rubber seal thing touch the paint or is it held away slightly by the tape?

Thanks again!

Kore chase and yes, if you put the tape between the rubber trim and the paint. You need to put the 3M tape right out to the edge of the rubber trim to accomplish this.

just clean the paint really well and use 3m tape. Dont use some cheap tape, seen to many of my mustang friends stuff fall off with it.

I installed the Warn Thinline flares on my truck, they look nearly identical to the PW factory flares, but they come with 3M double sided tape on them. Install was easy and they look great.

Do a search on Kore suspension. It is one of the best suspension upgrades for our trucks, but pricey

I've got some Xenon flares waiting to be put on. I e-mailed 3M and they said:

We would suggest you use 3M™ Automotive Acrylic Plus Attachment Tape,
06397, Black, 1/2 in X 10 yds, 60 mil. 3M™ Automotive Adhesion Promoter
06396 is recommended for use on all plastic parts, such as RIM, TPO, PPO,
PP, PC, PC+ABS, etc., for tape-to-part adhesion when used with 3M tape
06397.

3M Automotive Aftermarket Division products are available through many
professional auto parts distributors. Use the store locator at
http://www.3m.com/automotive for local by state, Where To Buy information.

You may wish to visit the 3M Car Care Online Store at:
http://www.3m.com/automotive.

These web sites have store locator functions on their home pages and carry
3M products:

National Pronto (http://www.pronto-net.com), phone 800-477-6686.

Another option is to look in the Yellow Pages, under Automobile Body Shop
Equipment and Supplies, for a distributor carrying the 3M-product line.

If your retailer doesn't carry the product in stock, please ask them to
order it for you.
