Thumbs up My Smarty Vs. BullyDog experience

Lack of experience seems to always cost lots of money. This is my first diesel truck and couldn't see myself ever going back to gas. I love fast turbo street cars both domestic and import but driving my 1 ton is more fun than all of them.
I bought the triple dog when I first got my truck, got the latest version from Bud
who was always very cool and helpful.

I still have yet to dyno my truck because all the dyno shops around where I live can't fit my dually in their dyno, yeah I know it's lame. Any who the crazy larry program was always impressive to me. Its put down solid power but after reading about all the smarty posts I did start feeling like my truck was kinda laggy on the low end. The low end feature on the bully dog just made it fuel harder on the low end but didn't really make any more power. It was like if you barely touched the pedal you were instantly in 1/2 throttle mode. Not what I would call good driving manners and I always left low end power off because it surged and drove bad on the highway where smoothness is desired. So then I got a Predator Box drom Dr. performance and stacked that with the crazy larry. The Predator box worked by tricking the compuer on rail pressure and also acted as a boost fooler. The truck was fast but my best highway mpg was about 17 with just highway traveling.

Now for the smarty Big thanks to Bob Wagner, he was very cool and guys if you need springs, cams, injectors, smarty go to Bob at www.smartypower.com I got a few things from him and he was kind enough to give me a discount on the smarty. The guy knows how to treat his customers right. Ok I have finally tried all the smarty setting 1-9 on the aftermarket injector and aftermarket turbo file.

This is no BS, after 1/4 tank of diesel just filled up I used to get right around 125 miles on the first 1/4 tank even with on scary larry, crazzy larry, predator box....tried all the setting. But no matter what I tried I could never get much more than 125mpg for the first 1/4 tank.

Setting 1: You can really hear the timing rattle but it's not overwhelming. The throttle responds is 10X better than it was stock or with crazzy larry or any bullydog setting for that matter. I towed my big 5th wheel and never even had to downshift. Marco wrote that the initial mpg increase was almost too good to be true and he was right. I got 168 mpg out of my first 1/4 tank!!! That's a huge improvement!! I'm so excited about that, really I'm quite impressed.

Setting 9: Ok I can now say for 100% sure that the 180hp file fuel harder, drives better, had better low end power and does not surge on the highway at all. If carefull you can drive around town with zero smoke. However when I got rolling an layed into it all 4 tires in back would always light up. That something that didn't happpen before with the Bully Dog. Setting #7 is what actually works best for power because i have big injectors and it just fuel too much for normal street driving. But I'm sure on the stip it will be perfect because on the highway even with setting 9 I neve saw anything over 1350 degrees with out the use of water injection.

One thing that is very obvious to me now is the amount of homework Marco, Bob, John and all the others have done to make a product that had so many levels of settings. Smarty really is a very crafted, detailed product with tons of R&D which you can tell right away after it's downloaded.

The Bully Dod didn't suck or anything like that and Bud Kunz was awesome. But only having 3 setting such as tow, extreme and CL was very limiting because many of us here have aftermarket injectors, bigger turbo's and Smarty has taken that into account, Bully Dog has not.

If you are looking at a power adder or want the best proven MPG increase I would no doubt say buy the Smarty. If you want a deal contact me because I"ll have a Bully Dog for sale and a Predator box for sale very soon. They are not bad products but compared to Smarty they can't compete. I don't need dyno # to tell me which one has the best drivability, sheer thrust or best MPG

Another thing worth noting is that during normal cruising my EGT's are about 100 degrees or more cooler just normal driving,

I have no doubt that with the new electric flex-a-lite fane comming for the 3rd gens and Smarty in #1 setting all you dually guys will be getting 22+mpg highway if not more depending on how broken in your engine is. Once again great job to Marco and crew

Thanks. I had to make this post because I still can't believe how much my fuel MPG has gone up. And what's even better is that Marco apparently had fixed the overhead MPG display because when I used to have my BDTD it would say wild stuff like 26mp or so even though I was only getting 16-17mpg best hand calculated. Now with the smarty is stays around 18-19 which is very very close to the accurate hand calculated total of 19-20mpg

Ya, nice write up. Does anyone know if you can run that but still use the display functions from the edge attitude...Cuz right now I am running the hot juice w/ attitude and want to move to a Smarty but I like the display parameters of the Attitude...

I ran the edge for a while with the smarty. You can do it. I used to tow with the edge all the way up and while unloaded use the smarty. Now I do it all with the smarty.

Only improvements that can be made to the smarty are:
1. Need race program
2. On the fly adjustability
3. NEED race program
4. Faster program downloads to the truck
5. NEED RACE program
6. NEED RACE PROGRAM

So thats it and 2 & 4 are optional.
Otherwise the best deal in cummins perforemance.

yea I checked out my firends Smarty.. I was really shocked at how long the download time was.. Dosent make you want to change the settings EVER..

My hope is posts like this kick BD into gear. I have a PMT and that is one bad Mo Fo for switch on the fly and gauges but they do need program work..

Good for you

Nice write up, im gonna make a friend read it cause he is kinda thick headed and thinkin of going with a BD. I used to wonder my mileage was so low with my smarty but then i thought back and cant remember one tank that the right pedal was used "excessively". Then just last night i made a decent road trip and drove nice for once and wow i finally got 20.4 hand calculated. I love my smarty

Thumbs up

I liked my BDTP in the '06, but it doesnt have the same kick in the '04. Im really thinking about a Smarty. Also I like that you can change your speedo setting to fit your tire needs, since Im going to 35s.

Come on BD, YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

My BDTD (Triple Dog) allows me to change tire size.
What's a BDTP?
