Is my rail pressure too high?

Those of you with mechanical rp gauges, does your gauge "bounce" constantly? I'm sure it's probably normal, but mine bounces quite a bit.

No bounce to mine, rock steady at steady throttle. Idle right around 6500, cruise at 70 mph is a tick over 17k. I can modify that by modifying the RP with Smarty and it goes up for max and cruise but still the same at idle.

OK, it's starting to sound like my rp sensor may be acting a little funny. I really don't want to spend $200 to find out though. Why do they have to be so expensive?

i recently put the performax gauges in and they are very fast to respond, more so than my old gauges. i wouldn't describe it as "bouncing around" but the RP can vary a lot (and change fast) and has a wide range. with a manual rowing up through the gears from a stop my rp swings from 10k-19k and a slight change in the go peddle position can make it change a lot.

That is how mine is also. The RP moves around alot and is always being adjusted. Wonder what a Starscan tool would say?

Yeah, my gauge is very responsive and I see quick, dramatic changes in rail pressure which I'm sure is normal, but what I'm talking about is a constant bouncing between 20-21k at 70mph. I'm worried that the motor in the gauge might wear out quickly with as much bouncing as it does.

Mechanical rail pressure? As in running a line with 20k plus psi into your truck? Bad Idea. The sensor is electronic, what gauge are you running?

They bounce a lot, some of the gauges are "de-bounced" more than others...
The RP sounds a little high from what mine ran at when I had a RP gauge. I would see 19-20K cruising at 70-80.

On an 04.5 you are fine. A sensitive rail pressure gauge will bounce at cruise. Idle rail pressure will vary depending on load. Turn the AC on, and it will go up. Even pressing on the brakes or turning the steering wheel can make it go up. During cruise the same think applies. Go up a slight hill and pressure will go up.
Just relax and have fun with the truck.
