Is my rail pressure too high?

I just installed an Autometer rail pressure gauge yesterday and it's showing 7500 psi at idle and constantly bounces between 20-21k cruising at 70mph empty. From what I've been reading on here, this sounds high. I have the smarty set on #7 with everything on default except the timing, which is on 4. Your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

That sounds right at idle, cruising that is a little high, but not bad at all.

Close at idle, a little high cruising.

Try putting the RP at 1 and see what happens. With my truck, it runs a little high sometime, I have to watch it.

Its high across the board, 6-6.5k at idle and cruising should be around 17k. You cruise too long at 20-21k and its going to hurt an injector eventually. This is all given your gauge is correct.

Try backing the Smarty down to a lower setting and see what happens.

I backed the Smarty down to 1 on rail pressure and saw no difference in cruising pressure or idle pressure. I also tried it on 3 and cruising pressure was about 22-23k at 70mph and idle was about 8k.

Put it on the stock SW and see what you have...

04.5's are different...LOL Mine at idle in park is 6,580-7,000. If I put it in drive with my foot on the brake it is 7,500 to 8,500. Cruising at 70-75 MPH depending on how much I am pressing on the go pedal it is anywhere from 18,500 to 21,500. Pulling my trailer it is a little higher. This is with NO pressure increase with the Smarty or my Quad set to 0.

I did not know that... I can keep mine around 19k cruising. I have had some problems with RP being a little high. I do what I can to keep it down...

That sounds about right for RP 3, thats what I see.

Try the default on RP to see if it makes a difference.

What gauge are you using?

Default is #2 and that's where I see 7500 at idle and 20-21k at 70mph. I also see the same numbers with the Smarty set to stock pressure. My first post was incorrect. I have torque management and timing set to 4. I am using a brand new Autometer Ultra-Lite rail pressure gauge.

Have you tried backing the TQ management down? Be interesting to see what the gauge compares to a scan tool.

Haven't tried backing TQ management down, that idea just hit me this morning too. I'm thinking also that my rail pressure sensor could be a little off. The gauge bounces constantly between 20 and 21k at 70mph. It seems pretty steady at lower pressures though.

Sounds about normal to me for an 04.5 truck. Your gauge may be reading a little high.
