Is my BHAF adequate now?

Now that I have crested the 500hp mark, I'm starting to wonder if the BHAF on a torque tube is still flowing enough air, or is it possible that it may be hurting my performance a little bit? Anybody got any dyno numbers proving any kind of gains or losses by switching over to an aftermarket unit? I have never felt anything to make me feel that it is holding me back but I know that there are units out there flowing more cfms....

When I switched from BHAF to AFE on my 99 there was a noticeable performance difference.

That truck was in the 500hp area.

Taken from Cummins Performance Data, a CBTA5.9-M3 thats a 370hp @ 3000rpm engine requires 718cfm. Thats as high as they rate there 5.9s, on the sheet I have, however, in the 500+ realm they have a QSM11-M rated at 535hp @ 2300 and it lists that the required intake flow of 1259cfm. Thats alot more cubes than you are packing, but you are still close to requiring that much air for the output you have. Some stuff to chew on.

I just did some testing on gas turbo engines. A dirty or too small air filter starves the turbo (turbos in out case) for air and does infact make a noticable difference in power. It also made a noticable difference in boost onset (spool up) esspcially at elevation or with poor density altitude.

Im now going to go to a larger air inlet, larger filter etc....On our cummins, if your undersized I would amagine that this could also lower egts a measurable amount esspecially if using a digital peak hold egt gauge for measuring. I wouldn t expect to see it on a typical dial gauge.

I estimated 1300-1400 cfm for 600 hp, and one problem was on a flow bench was collapsing the filters. (I used old already used filters) In marginal situations or a dirty filter it could start to deform and pull in. That was what started my testing in the first place, I noticed a deformed filter on a car that had poor spool issues.

one thing to keep in mind... dont sacrafice quality for quantity. make sure whichever fliter you wind up using cleans the air great, aswell as increasing flow. something that you DZ prolly dont need to hear, but for other that may come across the thread and think that max cfm = the best filter.

BHAF=Big Honkin Air Filter, your best bet would be to search that. Just a Huge air filter that costs about $70 that people use with basic performance upgrades, ex; Chip, exhaust...etc

AFE= Advanced flow engineering. Really expensive intake(but most popular) but looks and works awesome:

BTW, does anyone know if the BHAF is much better than the SWISS CHEESE MOD and does it really support up to 450hp? If so, EDGE or BD turned up to highest should have any problems with BHAF, correct?

Ditto what cqestad said! Look at one of the Scotty, Uni, or Amsoil air systems. Thousands of SCORE and Barstow to Vegas competitors can't be wrong.
