Not sure if your asking if they work good (lots run that stack) or actually how they make the power (tst= timing, duration, preassure(on some models) smarty it downloads into the ecm all sorts of parameters and the mp-8 is all pressure and maybe some boost fooling).

the tst and the mp-8 plug into the wiring harness of the truck and the smarty plugs into the obd port under the dash and thats all. The TST and MP-8 are types of modules and the smarty is called a downloader or DL. Go to there sites and you will see the difference.

Thanks. I will take a look, would the II 6280 be the best turbo for this application as well, going to be ordering one here soon, just seeing what you thought.

Depends totally on your application and what you are looking for. Im sure that turbo would be alright but its all about your goals. If you wanna drag race or sled pull then that probably wont be big enough but it is probably a good starter turbo. Certainly better than the stocker.

running three modules you could probably spool a 66. I ran one with just the tst and a power pup on my 05. I can spool an aurora 5000 with a smarty and a tst on lower levels. 62 would be good to tow with, but youre not gonna beat many people at the pulls. these guys are serious anymore at the tracks

What I'm trying to figure out is if the TST is worth buying to stack with the Smarty? Or are most guys just running this stack because they already had a TST before getting a Smarty?

Timing, Duration, and DRIVABILITY from the Smarty. (SW 5 Stock Injectors, Aftermarket Turbo Program)
More Timing, More Duration and BIG TOP END from the TST (03 Twins Program, 3-1, Auto 6 degrees Timing)
Dial in the max rail pressure at 26ksi or so with the MP-8...plus boost fooling for more bottom end and a max boost cap or 28 psi (so the ECM thinks).
Pretty mean...drivable...towable...550hp-600hp on OEM injectors and CP3. I ran that set up for almost 50k.
The reason to have the TST...is you don't have to reload a program when your truck changes hats...yopu can go from 400 hp towing...to 575 hp racing in 3 button pushes...

I thought the tst was timing and injector pulse width. I agree with the adjustable part. I run the smarty on 8 and the tst off until I want lots of smoke or want to show somebody what a cummins can do
