??? Most efficient and simple exhaust mod
I have an 06 ctd which has 4 " pipe already looking into pro flo mufflers and maybe a cat delete. I want a nice rumble but not excessive volume do to a lot of long stints in the rig. Am I thinking along the right lines here which length mufler and should I get an offset? any other suggestions on brands of muuffler and should I delete the cat or leave it. And how will it affect the overall performance?

I basically asked the same question a couple weeks ago. The consensus was to replace the muffler only with a flow thru design. I bought the MBRP replacement muffler (I forget the part number, but if you contact Mark Craig at DPP he'll help you out). I ordered it last week and expected it today, but it looks like a no show. Anyway, most say it gives a nice tone without the drone and will lower EGT's 100 degrees or so. It comes with everything needed to mount for about $150.
There are other options out there that are a bit cheaper (Nelson, Donaldson) but they require a bit of pipe bending to make it work with the stock tail pipe.

From what I have learned on this board, removing the cat increases sound and may induce drone, but there is little to no performance gain. I will be leaving mine in.

Little to no performance gain at stock powerlevels. While towing, dropping the kitty drops EGT's preturbo by 150 degrees. At 400whp and above, it's definetly a restriction.

On my 04.5 I had an exhaust shop delete the muffler and left the Cat in place. Sounds great, especially at low RPMs, and it's not overwhelming at high RPMs (freeway). Only cost $65 for the labor and pipe.
As others have said would happen, EGTs are lower by some, it seems to spool a little quicker, and, believe it or not, the fuel economy went up by 1 or so...? I never hand-calc. anything, just watch the computer readout, so it could be wrong, but it definitely reads differently now. It averages higher than it ever has before (around 19.5) and I'm on the pedal more since it sounds great!
I thought I'd try this before getting an aftermarket muffler and at this point I'm sticking with it.

I just ordered the MBRP muffler and "S" pipe to replace my stock muffler today from DPP. The muffler is a stainless flow through type and with the "S" pipe they claim you can do it yourself. The price to S.E. Ks is $163.84 and I should have it next Tuesday. They tried to sell me the cat test pipe for $61.00 but I declined. The part number is mk96116 as stated in an earlier thread.

If you do the install yourself, before you remove the stock muffler and tailpipe try and hold the new components up where they should go and check on the fit. On my MegaCab the fit could have been better. The hangars on the MBRP muffler were about 12" forward of where they needed to be (I had a muffler shop cut them off and reweld them in the right spot), and the "S" pipe needed to be trimmed. If I put it together the way it came the factory tailipe couldn't be reused.
