Max spool cam?

Donm or anybody else got specs on this cam? I was wondering based on the price if it is a new cam rather than a lowly regrind? How does it compare the the helix 2?

Over on Competition Diesel their was a very long debate over Helix vrs Max spool cams. Hours of reading and a lot of good knowledge, but most of it was over my head. Check it out.

Unless they changed something the Maxspools are regrinds.

Maxspool is a regrind cam.

My recomendation is to go with the Helix 2. My best friend ran a MaxSpool for about 1000 miles. He now has a Helix 2.

I would never run a regrind in a cummins, but i do recognize that some guys must be having luck running them. I just know enough guys that have had problems doing it that i wouldn't take the chance.

I too have read of a few failures on re-grinds....makes me a little nervous/weary of the regrinds....I would probably just bite the bullet and get a billet cam...

I am with most of everyone else. I am not a fan of regrinds as they are prone to fail. Even in ATV's they do not last long and are very hard on valvetrain. But on the other hand they seem to make good power and are cheaper. Like I always say you get what you pay for.

Yeah its weird that the regrinds from maxspool are about the same price as the new cams. I guess I would have to read that post on comp d to get good info on it but I just dont see how you can get MORE lift from grinding the lobes of a cam. Or maybe thats not what they are doing.

yes it is....maxspool=greg hogue...he also makes a billet cam but it is more $$ then the helix billet cams.

the maxspool re-grinds used to be cheaper then the F1's....I did not know they are close to the same price now?

The camshaft in the Cummins is the single highest wear rate part in the engine. By a factor of hundreds of percentage points. It takes a hard and durable part to not wear out. Todays oil is not helping that either.

I replace regrinds that oftentimes have under a 1000 miles use in the Cummins.

Over the years Cummins has done a number of things to increase the durability of the cams and in stock form they rarely ( actually very rarely ) fail. Regrinds work against Cummins axioms of durability and take one backwards from that point.

Thank you Don I just needed you to tell me that I needed to get a helix 2 and springs.

While I gotcha here, am I anywhere in the range that I would prefer the helix 3 or is the 2 really the way to go unless its a dedicated race/pullin rig?

I have thought about the H3 as well and it seems in these CR motors the H2 is all that is needed.

Should have the sticks back today from what I here so I will be up and goin again. If I don't like the way it spools after the pull tomorrow and Saturday I will be adding a cam.

I think that I heard somewhere that the Maxspool is also a step child of the Banks (I forgot my smoke in the garage) machine, but not for sure.

You know I have the same question. All my truck is for is pulling but John at Floor it said the Helix 2 was what I wanted unless it was a 12valve turning 5,000rpm. I still haven't put the helix 2 in and if the helix 3 is going to make more power then thats what I need. Don any suggestions?
