magnaflow muffler question

magnaflow muffler question
last week i had a magnaflow 7" x 24" (30" overall) stainless muffler installed on my truck. 5 min later i hated it. the drone at 70-75 mph is terrible. the rest of the exhaust system is all stock. will a resonator help? will it hurt performance?
here is a link to one i found. is this what i need?

thanks for any info

I have a Magnaflow on mine and I have no drone. Even when the rest of my exhaust was still stock I still had none. I would bet that a resonator will make the truck sound like stock again..

I would try putting an exhaust tip on first. Getting the exhaust exit out from under the truck usually mellows things out. A turn down angled slightly back has worked for me in the past. The stock tailpipe is really tucked up under the truck too far.

Used to have a flowmaster and replaced it with the magnaflow, no drone its excellent. As a matter of fact EGT's dropped considerably even at WOT. The best is during cool down, in no time (less than a minute) the EGT guage is at 300 after driving unloaded for 70 miles. (usually running about 650 DEGF)
I do have a tip that extends past the rear right side. Might try that but maybe the clamp/weld was not good???

I have a silverline stainless exhaust on with their exhaust tip with my Pacbrake.
Real harsh drone on my truck especially under load towing.
However, I found something real strange...
With 2-600 pound steel strongman disks in the bed and the tailgate down...no trailer...I had no drone.
So either the tailgate down stopped the resonance or the weight of the disks stopped the drone...maybe from the bed vibrating?
I have a bed cover on...I think theres something going on causing this. I will put the tailgate down empty tomorrow before the aeroturbine goes on.
I am putting the Aeroturbine on tomorrow with the system.
If I still have drone I am taking the silverline muffler off and getting a 51" donaldson with the Aeroturbine.
I may also try a turn down.
This tip extends well past where the stock pipe ended.

I too tried the 30" Magnaflow. It nearly vibrated my teeth loose. I put the factory muffler back in place until I could decide what to do. I now have a Banks 4" down pipe and a 51" Donaldson just waiting to install (with in a week or two I hope!).

If I'm reading all this right, it seems some people with magnaflows have terrible resonance, and others have none? Maybe the specific magnaflow used has something to do with it, or maybe some of the resonance is in the bed itself like someone else was saying?
This is interesting, maybe those of you who have had magnaflows with drone can come to a consensus on which model you had, and where the exhaust exited the truck. Might find what to do and what not to do if you want to run a magnaflow.

Thats what I am thinking.
there might be a transfer of resonance thru a hanger or its sound transfer from the pipe to the thin metal of the truck itself.
I might consider an undercoating on the bed.

I still think alot of this "drone" is personal preference and opinion. Not saying you guys aren't hearing somethin, just saying we all have different opinions of what pleasing exhaust is. I just put on the complete Banks monster exhaust and I was worried about the drone because of some comments on here, but it sounds awesome. I was going to do the magnaflow system because I use magnaflow on some of the race cars I deal with and love them but all the input on here made me shy away. I might have liked it.

I think the drone they speak of is so loud that nobody could like it. I've heard drone like that before, and it's so loud, and of such a single tone, that it can drown out just about anything else you might be trying to hear. You'll often hear pieces of the interior buzzing along with it.
On the racecar, magnaflows seem to generally work very well. I know a fair number of guy who use them, some of them running in the 10's with street cars. A lot of the turbo mustang guys that make over 1000 hp at the wheels run them. Go to turbomustangs.com and do a couple of searches, and you can see the kind of power some of them gained by changing mufflers, often from a flowmaster to either a magnaflow or some other non-chambered design. I myself picked up 2 tenths and almost 2 mph on a 440 duster street car I had by switching from flowmasters to magnaflows. That was the only change made, and the mufflers were almost exactly the same size-same inlet and outlet sizes for sure. Same piping-only the mufflers changed.

The drone in my truck was so intense it felt like the entire interior was vibrating...which it was and the plastic parts of the interior started their own song while I passed thru the 18-2200 rpm range. I was curious if I would get the drone and if it was as bad as some described. I can say now...yeah its bad.
Or shall I say it was bad. I put the Aeroturbine just behind my Pacbrake and nowI have a throatier [is that a word] growl and no drone. Dave at Diesel Power Products said it seemed like the long beds showed the drone the worst. He was correct and I think what I have now will work.
I will see how it pans out with a load.

I tried the biggest diesel truck Magnaflow they make. It's 30" long by 7" round, 4" straight thru. Make no mistake, the drone was intense as others agree. It is weird that some people are not experiencing it. Are the people without the drone using the full Magnaflow exhaust kit, and those with drone only replacing the muffler in the OE system, which is what I tried?
I know it wasn't just something only I could hear as the owner and workers at Boise Muffler all agreed it was unbearable. Weird thing was, there wasn't any drone until the truck approched operating temp. Ice cold, it was great.
My experience with Magnaflow on gassers has been excellent. They are my muffler/system of choice for those cars/trucks. This drone problem on the CTD isn't just limited to Magnaflow, but it seems most pronouced with them.
Seems like there are two known ways to get rid of the dreaded drone. Either install an Areotrubine as far forward as possible with just about any exhaust system, or use a Donalson/Nelson 51" muffler.
