Made my own GPS Mount.. What ya think?
Hey all...
I got out in the Holiday shopping frenzy and bought a Cheap GPS unit... The Windshield mount was really ugly so I made my own... Cost me all of $2.00 for a Strip on metal and a couple of screws...
Here is just the mount with out the GPS on it... Small and I don't think looks to bad..
Here it is with the GPS mounted on it.. Still high enough to see but not up in the windshield view or stuck to the windshield like the mount that came with it.
And I didn't even have to drill the Dashboard.. Above the radio there are a couple of slots that the bracket fit right into.. Holds pretty good and doesn't move at all...

Any reception problems? I've got mine mounted on the windshield, and even with the waaay laid back windshield I can have reception problems way down in a velley or canyon.

not so far... I had the dash apart most of the day so I didn't get much time ot rty it out.. but I did drive it around the block a few times and it stayed online...
I'ts now a very good unit so I won't be suprised if it pops in and out.. only paid $199 for it on sale at Radio shack (the only place in town where there was no line...

I like it! The simpler the better I say
Did you have to remove any bezels or plastic bits to get it held securely? Or is it just wedged in between stuff? Hopefully its screwd down to something.
Receeption issues are most likely a function of terrain and not interferrence from your vehicle. IMHO

didn't have to screw it into anything.. Right behind the mount I found a couple of slots above the radio.. I pulled the radio and dash face, bent a piece of metal to fit into those slots. It fit tight so I didn't have to screw it in.. I did notch the lip on the dash board top.. But even if the bracket is removed at some time you would never see the notch unless you removed the dash face.. It took 5 bends to get it in there securely...

What I meant was this. The windshield mount gives a lot clearer view of the sky (although bulky looking) and GPS reception is kind of line-of-sight. It needs to "see" the (8-12?) satelites it's receiving data from. I've been in a hurry and just sat mine on the passenger seat and it wouldn't work.

the antena is that little thing sticking up out of the unit...
the dash is far enough forward and the windshield tilts back far enough that it seems to work good there.. I drove around alot today and it had constant connection... the MPH and compas react quickly
