Save a little longer and get a new valvebody. I'm running just a DTT valve body and I'm holding 400hp to the rear wheels. My 47re was most definately not designed to hold that. Not to mention that with a new valvebody you get something that is pre assembled at the right pressures, the right shift points, everything.

Question

thanks for the info. ok i have another bumb question.i looked at the thread you were talking about.the SMR sight only list a kit for up to 03 and a 47RE. i have a 2004.5 with a 48RE. but TransGo list one for a 03-06 48RE kit.now that i am confused. what is the diffrance between the 47RE and a 48RE ? allso if SMR sells a kit for my 48RE i might just buy it and do it my self.it will save me around 200 dollers.but for 446.59 DTT wil sell me a brand new valve body set up for me allready to go.now i am not scared to mod a valve body my self. just do not know which way would be better for me to go.so what do you guys think? thanks for all the info. Give Dave Goerend a call I'm sure his will be less expensive than that and probably just as good of quality.

47REs were PRE 04.5 cummins. You have a 48RE. Basically it was built to hold the power of the 600+ series engines. Tranny talk: first number is the number of gears and the second is its strengh. So, the 48RE has "4" gears and the strength of its "8" (beleive their rated 1-9 or something? cant remember). just a little fyi

I'm still not sure, but, I think there is something different for 2005 48s that makes shift kits a little trickier, anyone know?

Thanks.

You do. They started using the 48RE in 2003 for the HO motors. All the 305/555 HO engines had the 48RE. In 04 all they used was 48RE.

Ok, here is what I used and I like it. I didn't do the converter yet but I think I am going to try the converter made by these guys. This shift kit and the extra valves (used to keep from drilling valve body casting) ran me about 125.00 plus shipping if I remember correctly.

Modifications made to the 48RE included a Superior VB kit for the 99 up
A500/618. (Superior Part #K500-618-L)

The kit was installed as per instructions except for the following.

1)Do not drill the Pressure Regulator valve wall as per kit as
a Sonnax Pressure Regulator valve is used instead. (Sonnax part
#2271-02K)

2)Do not drill the Valve Body casting for the manual valve
that comes in the kit because a Sonnax valve is used instead.
(Sonnax part #22771-09)

3)Replace the 4-spool lockup valve with a Sonnax 4 spool
convertor valve. (Sonnax part #22771A-01)

4)I also delete or remove the cooler line check valve as the
Sonnax PR valve moves the check valve into the VB where it belongs. The
original check valve is located in one of the cooler lines where the
lines go from the metal to rubber line at the fender well and its part of the coupler.

5)Replace stock torque converter with ATC/Repco part #CR70X-S1
I use this 99 up Superior Kit on ALL models RWD OD Dodges with the
incorporation of the Sonnax valve set.

1) This keeps the convertor charged at full throttle and lube flow
at max.

2) It also allows for extended idle in park. The Sonnax manual valve
with the Pressure Regulator valve achieves this goal.
These modifications are highly recommended with any rebuild and
Required for all diesel applications in my shop. The above modifications work extremely well for lockup and are PERFECT for a lower stall convertor like this one. The convertor is well suited in the 305 HO '03 and '04 models and the new 325 hp 600 ft lbs torque for the '04.5 models.

Bobby at AXIOM in Charlotte NC (256)767-3141 can help you order these. You might want to mention that George from Affordable in Sanford gave you his information. Great tranny mods for a VERY reasonable cost compared to the rest of the market.

EDIT: I don't think these mods are 05 and up friendly though because the 05's are complete drive by wire. The 04's and prior and 04.5's I think have a throttle cable for the valve body.

good luck

That would be me. Yeah a bummer on the engine but now a stroker is in the works. They don't have a website that I know of. this kit if you will was talked about alot on dieselram.com by a transmission guy there. I just called that place and ordered the superior kit and the 3 sonnax valves. I did it myself in a few hours. Just take your time taking the valvebody apart and keep an eye on all the check *****. I used my factory service manual to aid in the process. Good luck.
any questions, pm me and I can give you my phone number.
later
