Location for second oil pressure and coolant senders...

I need to add a second oil pressure sender and coolant temp sender to my early 05 Dodge Cummins engine.

Where should I locate them ?

I assume one of the ports above the exhaust manifold would work for the coolant sensor ?

I noticed there are two ports on the top of the oil filter head. Would one of these work OK for the oil pressure sender ? (BTW: according to the shop manual, all the oil ports on this engine are metric O Ring ports.)

Thanks

For the oil, there are two 1/8"NPT ports on top of the oil filter housing. Remove the air box, and you'll have easy access. For the water, and of the plugs on top of the head, next to the exhaust manifold, will be fine.

Does it matter which oil port on the filter housing I use ? Are they both the same or is one prefilter and one post filter or something like that ?

Does anyone see a problem with drilling and tapping those to fit the metric thread on the sender ?

Thanks.

Nope - both are the same. Either one will work.

Yes. Don't do it. You're on the unfiltered side, and you'll send the shavings throughout your engine.

Every sending unit I've seen has had 1/8" threads on it... are you sure the one you have is metric?

I've got the engine out of the truck. What if I pulled the filter head off, tapped it, cleaned it and replaced it ?

Actually, it isn't. It is ORB 7/16-20 (AN4). I thought it was M11 x 1.25.

Is there any specific coolant port I should use ? Is one more representative than the rest ?

Well, that would certainly work. Not exactly the standard installation technique for installing a gauge (pulling the whole engine), but hey...

Not really. I suppose, technically, that you would read a little warmer towards the back of the block, but for the most part, one port is as good as another.

you can get adapters to go from the orb to npt.. i would recomend this... for the simple reason if you had something happen and you needed to remove the sensor and plug the hole... 1/8"npt is easy to get anywhere, while a 7/16" orb plug is harder to find... or you could remote mount your sender...? get a hose made up that has a male 1/8"npt fitting and a female orb fitting [i do remember seeing those, or maybe i am getting confused with the orfs fittings?]

I think Superduty may be transplanting a Cummins into his "superduty".

If so, let us know how it goes.
