Interesting in Regard to " BD" Diesel Performance Items seems like some of there Items for Diesel Trucks are really Great Intercooler , hearing good things about their new 700R Twins, But What about there Aftermarket Transmissions I really do not see any High HP Trucks out there Running them has anyone had experince with them, do they Run Billet or offer billet Shafts for there Tranny Builds. Seems As All Vendors have there Forteit Really good at specific Items or Parts, And then Just Ok at other things, and this Seems to Apply to ATS---Industrial Injection--And BD and all the Vendors that try to be a Jack of All Trades for lack of a better Term.
It Seems by looks alone and just shear Mass that The Spearco Intercooler would outperform the BD.

Mass bring "thermal inertia". Mass alone doesn't help a CAC-- it just adds a "flywheel effect" to the heating and cooling cycles.

I'd think you want a CAC that was pretty lightweight. It will heat up faster and dump heat to the environment sooner.

I don't want a CAC to absorb heat-- I want it to transfer it.

IMO, lighter is better (and faster).

yea but weight can equil more mass and more surface area like the htt im not an expert like zoo but to in order to get more flow and surface area u will need more mass which equils weight. and sorry i cant spell guys. same concept in areo space, a bigger larger lift load means bigger motors and stronger airframe.

I spoke to BD's Turbo/airflow engineer last Friday and asked him about the the performance limits of the current production intercooler.
In my application (and RPM's) he said the intercooler would produce about 1 psi of pressure drop at around 1000hp (I think he said 1500cfm).

Bottom line.....Yup! That'll work just fine!

Yes, John really is an engineer.
About 2 minutes into my first conversation with John I began to realize that he that he wasn't guessing.......About Anything!
Everything he does is deliberate and carefully calculated.
Bd's airflow products reflect much of this.

Good thread...

Still one piece of info that is critical and nothing else really matters. There is not a shread of empirical evidence from actual testing to prove where these CAC's line up. One would have to measure total airflow, input vs output temps, and restriction. Since the main job of the CAC is to x-fer heat, the input/output temps would be the most valuable measurement.

Regardless of construction, I don't think there is a whole lot of difference in performance in the different aftermarket CAC's. Although I was leaning BD, I went with HTT due to the price difference at the time.

Justin, not entirely sure I agree with your premise of lightness. While we completely agree on the need to exchange heat as quickly as possible, I see the extra mass as acting like a heat sink. Or a "heat reservoir" if you will. All other things being equal, a unit of greater mass has the ability to absorb more heat over time. A unit of less mass may reach a heat saturation point that it is not able shed enough heat in time and thus not able to exchange heat from the air with any efficiency and reduce air temps either. Of course the goal is to be able to shed that heat quickly, but real world observation suggests this isn't so. I was able to have a rather subjective but nonetheless apples to apples comparison. With my old twins, I went out and blasted up and down a few quick floggings and the 30lb stock intercooler could not be touched bare handed on the input or output sides as the temps were so danged hot. It only took about 35-40 minutes to put on the 75lbs HTT CAC and I repeated the same flogging. Although warm I was able to touch the intake side without issue, the output side was maybe 10-20* above ambient, which was about 55* that day.

We definitely do build a transmission that can have billet parts added. We have a couple of different versions of transmissions. The performance transmission that we offer can have the billet shafts added to it. Our Race version of the transmission comes with billet in and billet out and the choice to upgrade the intermediate shaft to billet as well.

The difference between ours and the Spearco is the construction method. They use bar and plate, we use the extruded tubing, which is much more efficient.
