You are probably right. My truck is not lifted and my pinion seal is not leaking.... yet. I cant remember if the guys at the track with leaking pinion seals have lifts or not. If thats the worst thing that happens from me drag racing, I can live with it

You can move the lever back to the 2wd position, but as others have stated it will not disengage from 4wd until the transfer case isn't under a load. Check out the picture, the left side is out of a manual shift 271 case, the right side is out of a 273 electronic shift case. The left one is shown in 2wd position, when in 4wd you rotate the shift plate thing counterclockwise which pushes the largest ring to the right to engage four wheel drive. When you return it to the 2wd position, the only thing to force it back is the spring on the shaft. It isn't strong enough to disengage the transfer case while under a load. Hope this makes sense, I thought the picture would clear this up.

Yea whenever I got the trans built I decided not to do an intermediate and output shaft just yet. After the turbo and afew other mods I might be in the 500hp range so it will probably be time to have the other 2 installed. What psi were you launching at? Thanks everyone for chiming in on this question, it certantly clears things up and the pictures were a big help 5.9 excursion.

I have over 1600 1/4 mile passes on my 02. I leave it in 4x4 all the way down the track. I used to move the lever out once it hit 3rd, but once I realized that it wasn't actually going out of 4x4, I stopped doing it. I have other things to thing about. Now of course the truck will actually chirp tires on the 3-4 shift in 2wd, so it wouldn't be smart for me to do it anyway.

I still have trouble believing the pinion seals are leaking because of racing in 4wd. As stated, the front end and front driveshaft are always turning so they're still turning the same speed whether you're in 2wd or 4wd.

I've seen trucks that don't race in 4wd that have leaking pinion seals, and mine has a bunch of 1/4 mile passes on it with no trace of any leaking (yet ).
