try getting a hold of someone who works at magnaflow performance exhaust... i haven't been to their webpage in a while, but in the first issue of diesel power mag, they had an ad there about coming out with high performance diesel catalytic converters in 3.5", 4" and 5" sizes...

i'd bet with some home brew manufacturing, you could cut the ends open where the 4" pipe enters and reweld on some 5" stubs to it... that would allow you to direct bolt it to a 5" system and it would maybe improve the flow of it as it would have a +19²" in/out to flow through vs a +12²" in/out of a 4" pipe

My truck doesn't have one of these animals of course being an 04. I worked in an auto shop for a few years when I was in school and we found out that the gutts were falling out of kittys back then because people couldn't aford to get a new one when their old kitty got constipated . We had no idea what was happening utill we looked one day, silly kitty, still there just guttless. Of course that was as big of a no no then as it would be today I guess the worst thing is they make replacement cost so high on these things, seems like a rip and they do stop up. Laws to protect the inviorment aren't a bad thing but they go to extreames on one thing and overlook so many others..LCH

Just curious....
I was told at the dealership that the only reason CATs were put on the newer Rams was so that they could be sold in California. If other 3/4 and 1 ton units are not required to have them, why do we?

After getting rid of the kitty and muffler the truck got at least 2-3 mpg more. I opened up the air intake and I got another 1-2 mpg.

That was true with the 2nd gen 24 valve trucks.
(Maine as well)

The 2004.5 on up have the cat in all states due to the new EPA reg's, which for the rest of us, are almost as bad as Commiefornia's.

So you got a 4-5 MPG increase by doing intake and exhaust?

I am not so sure the information in this post is completely acurate, if it were that easy to get 5 mpg more, then we would all be getting about 22 mpg.
I can see 1-2 mpg for both mods, but a total of 5 possible, not really.

Yes I went from 16-17 stop and go traffic to 21-22. On the highway at 70ish I am getting 24-26 no problem. Just putting up real numbers for my truck. I even did the math the old school way after filling up and with both highway and burbs driving on that tank it was just under 21mpg.
