Kayak Rack - what kind do you have?

I'm looking for ideas on a rack for my kayak. I'd prefer one that is bed mounted instead of cab mounted, but will consider either.

Lets see what you've got and hear why you like it!

I have a headache rack that is just a touch higher than the cab and then i use an yakima (sp) that goes into the reciever hitch. I don't have any pics right now I will try to get you some.

This is a pic of NRiver's truck with a Canvas-Back Canopy Cover on his truck. Would something like that work? I don't have any idea on cost or if it would be worth it for your use.

I built my own rack, and it works, but the way it mounts is bothering me. It slides into the 4 corners of the bed, into the stake pockets. The rack is very secure, but the bouncing/rattling when going down the beach is taking it's toll on the metal around the bed stake pockets. It is stressing the area out.

I've been hoping to find something that mounts securely without having to drill, screw, or bolt it to my bed.

Thanks for the posts - NRiver's truck is AWESOME.

TexasCTD, you beat me to posting my own truck, LOL. Cool

You could use it for that. When I bought it they rated it for about 500 lbs. It cost about the same as any shell, it is just more versitle (imho), tough look too. With the sides up, there is little view of the shell. With the sides down, I have driven through thunderstorms with heavy rain and had no leaks. I will say that now after having it for 7 years, this is off my old 99, it could use some new canvas. It is wearing a bit thin and a new canvas would be cool. THere are some drips now if is sits and the rain puddles for a couple days.

http://can-back.com/ The new ones that rate ar 100 or 150 capacity. Should be great for your use.

the side view, one of my other fav pics.

Thanks!!!

Back on subject. Not sure if the Thule bed rack fits the truck. I tried a search on their web page, it does not look like the Xsporter is avail for the dodge. It may be worth more looking for something similer.

How long have you had it and how well is it holding up? Is it ok for freeway use?

The top is off my "old" 1999 dodge. I had it on there for about 4 years, then storage for 1. Just put it on this truck a couple months back. I think it fits good for not being for this truck...

The material is wearing thin on top, it can seep through if drenched for days and sitting. It did not do this new. It is not a big deal for the most part. I have thought about getting a price on a new canvas. It would look newer to.

As far as highway, no problems. I drive with the sides up, down, what ever. I drove from atlanta to portland with the back full, no problems. I prefer sides up, that way I can see better.

Looks like you are close, when you are in town feel free to PM me and I can show you the top.
