You will get many differing opinions on this one. Both DC and Cummins do not recommend the use of oiled filters. If you have a turbo failure while under warranty chances are the claim will be denied.

Actually, the issue is with any aftermarket filter. Cummins website states filters like K&N are not recommended and may void the warranty. I have heard this may be for two reasons. 1) the aftermarket drop-ins may not seal at the stock air box gasket properly, 2) people tend to let them go too long before cleaing.
If you use a FIPK/cone type system and maintain it you will be fine. The pro off road folks wouldn't be using them if they didn't work. Just be sure to take it off the truck and put the stocker back on if you do take it in for warranty work.
My local dealer mechanic actually told me they do not have a problem with the cone type filters. They sell them in their parts department and offer service on them! I would not risk this because I know he will not have the last word on a warranty claim. DC will surely have a rep come out and tell you to pound sand.
Hope this helps,

This is a post from a while back.
Re:K&N or Not in HO Cummins??
From the Cummins website:
"Does DaimlerChrysler authorize the use of high-flow aftermarket air filters such as K&N with my Cummins engine?
No. DaimlerChrysler and Cummins do not recommend the use of increased flow air filters such as K&N, because they can allow contaminants into the intake that can ruin an engine (scoring the sides of the pistons, etc.)"
Not entering an opinion. Just passing information from the Cummins website.

If you want increased air flow, go with go with Scotty or AFE. Talk to Scotty or Push Rod on this site if you're interested in the Scotty system.

Hum, I dropped in the AMSOIL TS 189 Foam Air Cleaner into the air box with no mods and it fit perfectly for seal purposes. I actually has to push down a little on the top of the box to get the springy-clip do-dads to clip. Glad I kept my stock one and have it on the shelf at home....I guess I better remove the AMSOIL sticker from on top of the box too....
The only thing I could find on the Cummins Website was this..
" Will I void my warranty if I use any after market performance enhancing devices?
If you use any after market performance enhancing device—and it is determined that the device caused damage to the engine, drive train or vehicle---then yes, your warranty would be voided for that damage. "

I pulled the bottom paragraph off of my post. It was part of the cut and paste I did, not something I added.
That entire section is no longer on the Cummins website, just the disclaimer against all aftermarket devices given above.

I sent them a reply asking about the warranty being voided.
I'll post any reply that they send me.
I remember seeing something several years ago about aftermarket parts voiding a warranty,
I think it had something to do with SEMA fighting the mfgrs about this very thing.
It's been a while & I don't remember all of it but I think there was a ruling saying that your warranty couldn't be voided for something like an aftermarket air filter ( a computer chip would be diffrent it actually changes the way the engine management system works),
Does anyone else remember anything about that?
It seems rediculous that they could void a warranty for an air filter or the FIPK set up.
I have K&N's on everything I own but my lawn mower (just because I haven't found one yet).
I have them on my Volkswagen powered dune buggy & my Yamaha YFM660R Raptor, these are driven almost exclusivly in the sand dunes at Little Sahara in Waynoka OK.
This is a very fine powdered sand & every time I've pulled the filters off to be cleaned & re-oiled I have not found a single speck of sand or dust in the intake tract.
I couldn't say that about the stock air filter!!
It is well known that the K&N type filters not only flow more air but filter better than stock replacements.
Why would they have a problem with us using a better air filter???
If they would void the warranty because of the K&N why wouldn't they void the warranty if you use a Fram, Purolator or anything but a MoPar filter???
I'll get off the soapbox now & let someone else climb on it!!

Here's the reply I got from K&N on the warranty,
Dear Dave,
Contrary to what you may have heard or read, in the USA, a K&N Filtercharger will not void your vehicle warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, passed in 1975, prohibits a manufacturer from conditioning its warranty of a consumer product upon the consumer using any article or service (other than one provided without charge under the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name, unless expressly authorized by the Federal Trade Commission. If the manufacturer does not provide air filters free of charge, they cannot void the vehicle's warranty simply because you have installed an aftermarket air filter.
For a more thorough discussion of this law known as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty, see our vehicle warranty section of our Air Filter Facts at page http://knfilters.com/facts.htm#VWNTY <http://knfilters.com/facts.htm>. Also see our letter regarding warranty issues at <http://knfilters.com/warrantyletter.htm>.

At risk of considerable flamming, I'll pass along information from a Dirtbike group on Yahoo. When the airfilter question comes up one thing always gets throw in. K&N's do allow some types of nasty stuff past. Out here in Kalifornia, Glamis is a very popular place with the sand crowd. Most who have used them end up running some type of pre-filter. Yes, they are sealed. We use grease to seal the filter in the airbox. Some use a little shot of wd or smear some grease (light film) inside the airbox. Just in a small area to see what the filter might be missing. K&N's are not high on the list of favorite filters. This is a specific example but I thought it worth mentioning.
The foam filters seem to filter better. Most on the list I'm speaking of, who run the K&N, use foam as a pre. Another side note is that the K&N filter better when dirty. The dirt clogs some of the larger openings in the filter.
Remember, I'm just passing along information shared by others. I still use the stock filter in all 4 dirtbikes (oiled foam), my truck (paper) and my $4k generator(paper). Jeep and Mustang are running K&N. Yes, I want a pre-filter for the Jeep.

I brought this up awhile back and got several different responses.
I also use k&n in my ctd and my modified 400ex with no air box lid all year round never had anything in carb. As far as "AFE"(all fired enginiers) three guys fired from K&N started their own business"AFE".
