Just welded up the Donaldson M085171...

Went pretty well for my boy & I.
Took our time, made a few measurements and started cutting with the torch, then welded it up and listened to the mellow tone.
Took it out and got up to about 50MPH, idleding at stops it sounds real good...EGT's look to be 30degs cooler....

Also did a home made PSM style intake, the EAA189 will be here shortly.

Some more here

A couple of questions; What kind of wire did you use in the mig? And did you have to put in any elbows? Been planing the same thing, but with a 51".

Straight thru or is it offset. I been thinking of doing the same. If it's straight thru, do the pipes move easily to attach to the muffler?

Thanks for the site compliment trik396, yeah the bushys' a lot o fun.

A couple of questions; What kind of wire did you use in the mig?

.023, dialed in and practiced on a old flowmaster and tail pipe in the junk heap....basically a lot of spot welds, fill in the blanks then...

And did you have to put in any elbows?

No elbows, and it barely changed the angle on the tail pipe. thats why I went with the 41"er, figured it would allow a little wiggle room.
Yes, the pipes allow some play to line it out once in place.

I'm assuming the Donaldson is mild steel and the Dodge stuff is stainless. Looks like your more on top this welding stuff than me, but isn't there something that happens when the two metals touch? Bimolecular reaction or something?

I have the same Donaldson. Great muffler, I've been running it since 2003. It is straight thru, not off-set. Because of this, the tailpipe will sit in further and without a extention it will start to turn the bumper black with soot. I added a chrome tip to put the tailpipe back out where it belongs, and all is good now.

Galvanic corrosion?, you gotta have allot of fluid (water) contact in common with both metals.

If I can get a magnet to stick on the metals, I know I can weld it...tail pipe liked the magnet

Thanks for the welding lesson. My usual plan is if I can get a ground clamp on it I can try to weld it, then grind it off, then put some bondo on it, then paint it.

Well, if it is, its a very low grade - not 304 or 409. And I dont recall ever reading any literature from Dodge stating they had a stainless exhaust.
