Intermediate shaft?

Who here has actually broke a stock intermediate shaft? What were the circumstances that caused it to break?

I have...

550 hp....37 inch tires...and 65k. Wiped the entire tranny...built pieces as well. Do it all is all I can say...if you want to run hot.

Ok, but why did it break? You weren't just driving a steady 55mph and it just decided to break. Four wheel drive boosted launch? Shifting locked to locked under high boost?

It really was the reasons stated...FATIGUE!

It was only a mild (compared to floored) downshift...4th to 3rd converter locked at 70 on the freeway passing...maybe 45 psi max...so therotical 450 hp passing through it then...not really even on it compared to my max numbers or 55-56 psi at 550 hp. It probably the n-tenth time...and it just crumbled...splintered.

Thats enough for me I went through a impute shaft on my 96 5 speed, not pretty. I'm going into the 2004.5 trans soon, everyone until now said its not necessary to do the intermediate shaft. Now I don't want to go without it. 800 could save me 8000. Yes I consider myself that lucky, If there was one that let go, I would probably be next. doug
