I never got mine lined up and it drives fine with no usual tire wear. Id take the tires off as it makes it easier to get to all the components.

You could do the what you ask removing the spring, but it takes a bit of manuvering and muscle to get it back in after the spacer. Spend 5 minutes taking off the tires cause it will save you an hour of trying to get your hands around thing with the tires in the way

Just my .02

I had to take the tires off and get a spring compressor to get the springs back in. You won't be able to get the axle to full droop with the tires on. Even at full droop, I couldn't the springs back in without the compressor. My truck drove great after the install. I had it aligned anyway to be sure. Sure enough the camber/caster (can't remember which) was off a bit; just means the edges would have worn out sooner. It drove straight though.

Do yourself a favor and pull the tires. It'll save you a lot of headache. Also, it took me about 3.5 hours but I also rotated all my tires so that added probably 45 minutes. I wasn't moving fast either. But the passenger side spring is a PITA to get back in. I had to use my bottle jack to push the axle DOWN from the frame. Oh, and you will need to unbolt your swaybar links. If you aren't putting in new shocks I wouldn't even bother trying to remove them from the shock towers. Just upbolt the bottom bolt, undo the three tower bolts and lift the whole assembly free. I forget which side, but I couldn't get it out but it was enough out of the way to get the job done.

Did you guys who had trouble with the passenger side coil undo the track bar at the frame? I had the same problem with the passenger side not drooping far enough until i realized the track bar was stopping it. Once i undid that one bolt at the frame, the passenger side dropped way down and all was well.

I hope you have a BIG spring compressor. I have one made for struts that I use on my Jeep springs, but it wouldn't fit over the massive diesel coils. If you have those POS two-part ones, I wouldn't even try. If you have a nice one, you MIGHT be able to use it if the thing is big enough. You'll still have to remove just about everything anyway, even if you can compress those coils a lot.

Spring compressor isn't necessary. You can take a rachet strap and a little trial and error and compress the spring enough to slide the whole assembly in with the spacer. That just how some of us on the cheap side work.

I've done two of my trucks now and used pretty much the same tricks.

Remove the tires, sway bar links, steering linkage and track bar and things will go alot smoother. With all this removed and the truck frame blocked up as high as possible, I fully compressed the springs with my floor jack under the axle and used then used two pieces of chain to hold the spring compressed. When you lower the jack the spring should pretty much fall out.

I did my 04 dually in about 2 hrs total with this method. The right tools sure do help.
