Question How far post turbo can the EGT probe be installed?

I have an EGT Autometer gauge I want to install, but don’t really want to drill and tap the cast metal on the manifold or elbow that is just post turbo. I understand the manifold will give the best cylinder readings and post turbo elbow will be about 300 (or so) lower. I’d like to just mount (weld stlye) the probe a few inches past the cast elbow. This location is about 6 inches past the turbo and pretty easy to install w/o tapping. Would anyone recommend this as a location to read EGT’s? Could I just say this location is about 400 degrees less than a manifold reading?

Here’s the reason for the EGT gauge. I have an EZ Edge (600 motor) installed and mostly use settings one and two. I also almost never tow or loaded and drive it pretty easy. I may not even need an EGT gauge, but the EZ Edge could add some higher EGT with my driving style?

As hot as these 600's run, no way I would go post turbo.

Yeah, I would do it right the first time and put the probe pre-turbo. Get the most accurate EGT info, then you won't have to guesstimate on your temps.-Steve

Definitely want it pre turbo.

FWIW - the further downstream of the turbo you go, the more useless the reading becomes.

Talking

Post Turbo is fine. Follow the pipe after the turbo and keep going. When you walk out past the back of the truck, keep going. When you come back to the front of the truck and see the manifold, put the sensor right there in front of the turbo. I believe between 2 and 3 is the recommended spot.

4-5-6 seem to run a little hotter [especially with the poor flow from 4] so mounted pre turbo in the back side of the vertical section [measuring 4-5-6] is recomended. harder to drill for though

Sounds like manifold is the way to go.

What are the max temps y'all are seeing w/your 600's?

I've seen 1375*F preturbo. I was pushing it hard when I installed the gauges and haven't seen egt that high since.
