Horsepower Question
I keep reading about people doing some fairly basic mods and getting hp levels of 600-700hp. I'm new to diesels, but an old hand at gas performance engines. So, with my limited information, it leads me down this path:
HP= (TQ x RPM)/5252
With a little high school algebra, you get this:
(HP x 5252) /RPM = TQ
My truck has a redline of about 3K rpm's. To get 600hp at 3K rpm's, you would need 1050 ft/lbs of torque.
Really? 1050 ft/Lbs? That's amazing! Am I missing something here? Are people routinly getting over 1000 ft/Lbs?

For the most part it doesnt seem like it takes a lot to get these trucks up there and your torque rating is usually pretty close to double the horsepower rating. Most likely if your above 500hp your getting close to 1000lb ft which is my goal...

I think a while back a few guys with 06s and a Smarty Tune only were hitting the rollers and getting 425-450. Amazing when you think about it. 600-700 HP is going to take a little more than what I would consider basic mods (ie turbo/fuel/injectors/transmission).

Maybe not routinely, but fairly often for sure. The HP and Torque gains that are possible as compared to gas engines and mods are amazing.

I have a street/track car that's putting 470 hp to the rollers. Let me tell you, it's quite a bit more than a a tune and some simple bolt ons! My 5.9 gas engine couldn't even come close to that, either - especially here at altitude.
I am impressed, I'll tell you that.
In the past, the only diesels I drove were military and rental trucks. Not very awe inspiring, to say the least. But this truck really jumps when you step on the gas. When people say, "Once you go diesel, you'll never go back", now I understand.

My mods got me 649hp and over alot of tq. I am shooting for 675+hp in a week with a tweak or two on timing, tweak on meth % and the mp-8.
Only 425-450 hp. I like that.

By the way, 500-550hp is fairly easy to do, once you get to the 600hp club its a little more involved and little more cash. Be smart research what is proven and have a tranny for the foundation to make the power.

Yep, as a rule close to double the torque of HP on these CDTs.
Many of the lower rpm 12v were more than double.
I would love to see what a 600hp cummins would feel like in a 3300lb car.
My 498bbc was 672hp at the fly wheel with no spray and it sure felt tougher than my 600hp 12v but I think that was the 4500lb disadvantage the cummins had to lug around.
