Question High EGT's despite some good mods.

I'm running a TST power max with HP on level 2 and Torque on level 2, and while towing it constantly causes the chip Nanny to cut fuel from high EGT's. Often its on a hill or trying to pick up some speed but not really heavy into it by any means. I have a stainless MBRP 4" from the Cat Delete back, a AFE air filter with all the plastic tubes and a AFE aluminum intake horn. Is there something else that can be done like a bigger exhaust turbo outlet? Or is it a matter of bigger turbo? The load was only about 6000lbs total and yet it was running hot on the outlet causing hiccups. PS the air filter is clean and good quality diesel.

Any advice is appreciated!

It might be the TST itself causing the high EGT's. When I run my juice with Attitude, with a heavy tow, (14,000) I never see more than 1250 running up 5% hills with the cruise control on. Boost is up to 27 psi. I also found you have much better control with the EGT's off the Cruise control.

It don't take but a second to get into 1350 degrees if you don't watch it.

the defuel temperature is set at 1400 F.

I can't keep it from getting that hot unless I just keep the TST set at power level 1 which is only timing advance (I think). It pulls just fine up hills in OD on setting 1 but if I add any more power than that it slowly climbs to high 1300's and tickles the Nanny into submission. I've got the max boost set at 38 lbs as well. It's working but should be that hard with only 6000lbs

Timing only is a good tow setting. 1400-1450 is where they run stock when towing.

My guess is that the TST. Towing 6Klbs I don't really ever see much over 1200*, boost is about 33.

What size tires are you running?
Automatic or manual transmission?
What gear ratio?

I'm thinking it's more in the lift and tires than the TST, but it all adds up. With just the TST, I don't think a bigger turbo will help any at all.

where do you have your EGT probe positioned? I believe mine was drilled just after the 3 cylinder from the front. The install instructions said it was the best place.

Also, if I shift out of OD and get the rev's up it'll cool the EGT's down a fair bit do to the increase in air flow through the engine. Maybe I'll make a call to the guys TST Power Max products and see what they think if yours is 1200F whilst towing.

The overall tire height is the same as the stockers, however they are 12 inches wide. I use the truck for getting to those places where the stockers dare to tread. Hunting, fishing and so-forth.

Automatic transmission and 3.73 rear end

When I had a stock turbo and everything else was stock on my truck I could run the TST on 2/2 pull a gross of 38K and my back down temp at 1350 and my truck would never back down from high egt's.. What is your boost running at?

Any time you do sustained work you have to be very aware of your engine/trans conditions. First off you are doing all the right things. You have the limiter set and you are concerned.

Every situation is different.... how hard you are on the accelerator, altitiude, grade and your truck. RAMRODD says he never backed down due to egt but that may be because that's the way he runs it.

Be sure to use Tow/Haul. The higher rpms cools it down. Using a power box for towing should be done with care.

On the 04.5+ 5.9's higher rpms are not as good as previous trucks.. Once you get above about 2500-2700 the EGT's really start to climb. I am not sure if its from the 3rd event or what, but pulling the same load in 4th vs 5th, 4th gets much much hotter..

Time for some more turbo!

I would look into a water injection system to keep that stuff cool on the hills. I used one when I towed cross country, and it was awesome. Kept the temps down really well. You just need a big tank, I made my own from a 5 gallon container, but I could have used more for the mountain driving I was doing.

What does your egt's run when on stock. Whenyou put the TST on 1/1 your egtks should go down 50 degres from stock.

Quick Reply: High EGT's despite some good mods.
