High EGT while towing?

I have had a 2006 Cummins that I bought new 2.5 years ago. Will towing over 10k#'s with a BDTD on tow mode with a quad boost fooler cause excessive egt's or help lower them like I have been told? It has stock turbo and stock exhaust. Pyro and gauges are on the way but any advance knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You will want to stay under 1400* Pre turbo, above that is the danger zone of melting parts if you run at thous temp to long, spike are ok. I like too stay below 1200* but I baby my truck. Maybe time for a turbo upgrade.

Welcome to the forum!

You aren't going to know anything without those gauges!

Get them in ASAP, and then you can know for sure...It seems like every truck runs a little different stock or modified...It's possible to blow up a truck when it's stock!

I would do something with that muffler first...either delete it (drone) or go with a Nelson or Donaldson if you like to keep it quite...No need to upgrade the whole exhaust, yet!

Thanks for the info. I do need to update the muffler. I won't be doing any more HP/TQ mods as far as performance goes so the rest of the exhaust should serve me well. I pulled about 10k#'s through east texas to louisiana and the truck did great with the tow mode and boost fooler. It never overheated and never down shifted at 75mph going up the long hills that I traveled. I got 13mpg hand calculated which amazed me and made my family members that have Chevy's "change their tune" when it came to talking trash about my Dodge. Their Chevy's did keep up but they only were towing about 3k#'s each. Thanks for the welcome as well. I have been reading this forum since I bought my truck and this is the first real queastion that I have had.

Your on the right track - Guages, Replace Muffler, replace air filter (not whole intake system)....both intake and muffler replacement help reduce egt's, better sound, more performance (not a ton, but noticable)....

On the EGT side....stock, unloaded, uphill, both my 05 and my 06 would hit 1400*'s quite easily....so as long as you keep it less than that (except short durations) i wouldnt be concerned.

Happy Towing

I think a muffler swap (and/or converter) will drop EGT's a good bit.

The boost fooler will help egts - don't think that had been answered for you yet.

Thanks for the input. I think there was no harm done on that last trip. I did replace the air filter with a better one but not the whole system and have had the boost fooler and BDTD for quite awhile. The truck actually runs better now after towing that heavy for as long as a trip that it was. I usually only tow about 5k#'s and that is not noticeable. I did the 10k#'s with cruise set at 75mph and the truck was flawless. I did pull some long steep grades, but nothing like the ones through out Arizona and California that I have seen.

Even on a 40 hp setting, you have to watch your egts pulling long grades, the truck will be pulling effortlessly at higher rpm,s,easy to hit 1400 plus in a heartbeat.

Yeah, these motors were built to tow, and always seem to drive better after a nice pull with a trailer!

Make sure you keep rpm at or above 1800.

I kept the rpms at about 2100 at 75mph. This seems to be the sweet spot on how the truck runs when pulling. My family that were driving their Chevy's were aggravating me because they were only going 70, which made me pull ahead just so I could get the truck to where it runs the best. I would be happy going slower or faster, but the truck does hit that nice spot at about 2100 rpms while pulling.

Pulling 10K @ 2100 RPM/75 MPH and netting 13 MPG is exceptional.

That is very exceptional and I wonder if the hand calculations were not some how done using new math...lol

Smarty Jr. SW-1, TM-2, TQ-4 and POD-99 (recently reduced to 90) reduced my EGT's approx. 250 degrees while towing 12,000#.
Good luck-John
